Chart-dominating, world-dominating girl group NewJeans have been appointed honorary tourism ambassadors to promote Korean culture to the world
Korean pop music has taken over the world in the last decade, and there is no doubt that almost everyone has heard of New Jeans. Thanks to this ‘Hallyu’ wave, tourism to South Korea has attained near pre-pandemic levels, with many visitors citing K-pop or K-dramas as their incentive for visiting.
More than 11 million tourists visited South Korea last year, a 245 per cent increase compared to the previous year when some pandemic restrictions were still in place, according to the Korea Tourism Organization.

New Jeans has succeeded other Korean celebrities, such as Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae and the iconic K-pop group BTS, who were previous representatives. The girl group received a plaque from Yoo In-Chon, South Korea’s Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, in the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Seoul, and will follow with a tourism campaign targeted towards younger audiences, who account for a third of tourists in South Korea.

“I am very happy to be appointed as an ambassador to promote Korean tourism,” said NewJeans member Minji, according to a translation, “I will take the lead with joy so that I can promote Korea's various charms.”
While the group has no diplomatic responsibilities, the members still shared their personal recommendations for tourists, including eating samgye-tang and cold buckwheat noodles on hot summer days, and taking “a photo a day”, which is an “unspoken rule among young Koreans”.
NewJeans member Hyein was unable to join the others on this day due to poor condition after an injury.
