Ryan Coogler, the writer, director and producer behind Sinners, is coming off a remarkable year. What began as a surprise hit quickly turned into one of 2025’s defining films, embraced by both critics and audiences and sparking a cultural shift that few saw coming.

But Coogler is no stranger to that level of box-office success, warm reception, cultural significance or even to Academy Awards nominations, having written and directed the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Panther movies, including the upcoming Black Panther 3.

His debut feature film Fruitvale Station won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at Sundance and the Avenir Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and made US$17 million at the box office on a modest US$900,000 budget.

The Sinners director would then helm Creed, the legacy sequel to Rocky, which would also perform well at the box office and lead him to Marvel and the Black Panther franchise. It’s worth noting that throughout all of this, he has been working with Michael B Jordan, from his first feature film all the way to Sinners.

Up next for Coogler is the highly anticipated Hulu X-Files reboot, which has him working alongside the series’ original creator Chris Carter. Danielle Deadwyler has already signed on for the lead role, and Coogler is hoping Gillian Anderson would reprise her role as Dana Scully. No word yet on whether David Duchovny will be returning as Fox Mulder…or if Coogler’s perennial collaborator Michael B Jordan will make an appearance.

Michael B Jordan, who took home the Academy Award for Best Actor at this year’s Oscars for his dual roles as twins Smoke and Stack in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, has long been regarded as one of Hollywood’s most talented and charismatic performers.

He is also one of Coogler’s most enduring creative partners. In Fruitvale Station, Coogler’s feature debut and their first project together, Jordan delivers a career-defining performance as Oscar Grant—the young African-American man shot and killed by police on New Year’s Day 2009.

Soon after, the two collaborated again on the first Creed film, a sequel and spin-off of Rocky. Under Coogler’s assured direction, Jordan stars opposite Sylvester Stallone, ushering in a new era for the franchise. As Adonis Creed—the son of Rocky’s former rival Apollo Creed—he offers modern audiences a compelling new boxer to root for. He would later star in two subsequent Creed sequels.

Jordan then joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Coogler-directed Black Panther—a critical and commercial triumph—and returned briefly in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, reprising his role as Erik Killmonger. As T’Challa’s rival, he brings menacing swagger and magnetic intensity to the role, delivering a villain as compelling as he is formidable.

In last year’s Sinners, Jordan reunited with the director once more, bringing their creative partnership full circle. He anchors the period horror-musical with not one, but two superb performances, imbuing Smoke and Stack with a compelling yin-and-yang dynamic.

Autumn Durald Arkapaw: ‘Sinners’ (2025), ‘The Last Showgirl’ (2024), ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ (2022), ‘Loki’ (2021)

Sinners Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw also had a big night at this year’s Oscars. Arkapaw, who is of Filipino-American descent, made history as the first woman, first woman of colour and first Southeast Asian to win an Academy Award for cinematography. Her powerful acceptance speech was also one of the most memorable of the night, especially when she asked all the women in the room to stand, “because I wouldn’t be here without you guys”.

The Oscar-nominated Sinners, however, isn’t the first film Autumn Durald Arkapaw has worked on with Ryan Coogler, having collaborated with him once before on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She also worked on The Last Showgirl, starring Pamela Anderson and the Disney+ Marvel series Loki.

Ludwig Göransson: ‘Sinners’ (2025), ‘Creed’ (2015), ‘Black Panther’ films (2018, 2022), ‘Tenet’ (2020), ‘The Mandalorian’ (2019–2023), ‘Oppenheimer’ (2023), ‘The Odyssey’ (2026) and ‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu’ (2026)

Ludwig Göransson, Oscar winner for Best Original Score for Sinners, is another long-time, close collaborator of Ryan Coogler. For a score built around the blues, Göransson did his homework, spending three months in New Orleans and consulting with blues legends. The resulting soundscape fuses pipe organs, Irish motifs and driving guitar riffs into a composition as eclectic yet cohesive as the film’s genre-blending narrative.

This kind of research is nothing new for Göransson, who spent months in Africa to produce the immersive score for the Black Panther films. For Creed, Göransson brought past and present together, expertly weaving the iconic Rocky theme with hip-hop beats.

Besides Ryan Coogler, Göransson also often works with Christopher Nolan, providing the score for Oppenheimer, which won him the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2024, and Tenet. His next Nolan project is The Odyssey, scheduled to come out later this year. He is also working on the music for the upcoming Mandalorian film.

Wunmi Mosaku: ‘Sinners’ (2025), ‘Loki’ (2021, 2023), ‘His House’ (2020), ‘Lovecraft Country’ (2020), ‘The Social Reckoning’ (2026), ‘This Is How it Goes’(TBA) and ‘The Life and Death of Wilson Shedd’ (TBA)

First-time Oscar nominee Wunmi Mosaku earned a coveted Best Supporting Actress nod for her role as Annie—Smoke’s powerful, no-nonsense love interest—in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. For the part, the Nigerian-British actress immersed herself in hoodoo practices and mastered a Louisiana Creole accent. The dedication paid off, nabbing not just an Academy Award nomination, but also a Critics Choice Awards nod and a BAFTA win for Best Supporting Actress.

Sinners is not Mosaku’s first foray into horror. She starred in the critically acclaimed film His House, which garnered her a Best Leading Actress BAFTA nomination and a British Independent Film Award win. Meanwhile, in Lovecraft Country, a series set during the Jim Crow period, she earned a Critics’ Choice Awards nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

She also starred in the Disney+ Marvel series Loki, where she plays Hunter B-15, a formidable Time Variance Authority (TVA) agent. She later reprised the role in the blockbuster superhero film Deadpool & Wolverine.

Up next for Mosaku are The Social Reckoning, directed by Aaron Sorkin and starring Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong, This Is How it Goes with Charlie Cox and The Life and Death of Wilson Shedd, alongside Amanda Seyfried.

Delroy Lindo: ‘Sinners’ (2025), ‘Da 5 Bloods’ (2020), ‘Get Shorty’ (1995), ‘Malcolm X’ (1992), ‘Godzilla x Kong: Supernova’ (2027)

Above Delroy Lindo’s monologue reportedly almost got cut out of the film

Veteran actor Delroy Lindo secured a Best Supporting Actor nod at this year’s Oscars for his commanding portrayal of alcoholic blues musician Delta Slim in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. His monologue—which he fought for to keep in the film—is a testament to his powerful performance.

Lindo has long been celebrated for his dynamic screen presence. He has worked with director Spike Lee, and has been referred to as Lee’s “secret weapon”, multiple times. Lindo has starred in Lee’s Malcolm X, Clockers, Crooklyn and, most notably, in Da 5 Bloods, where critics agree his turn as a Vietnam War veteran suffering from PTSD deserved more recognition than it received.

Audiences can see him next year in the kaiju film Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.

Hailee Steinfeld: ‘Sinners’ (2025), ‘Hawkeye’ (2021), ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ (2018), ‘The Edge of Seventeen’ (2016), ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ and ‘Pitch Perfect 3’ (2015, 2017), ’True Grit’ (2010), ‘Young Avengers’ (TBA), ‘Winter Games’ (TBA), ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ (2027)

In Sinners, Hailee Steinfeld stars as Mary, the passé blanc (white-passing) biracial ex-girlfriend of Michael B Jordan’s Stack. She plays Mary as both a sharp-tongued force (her viral, unapologetic dialogue has become a TikTok sensation) and a tragic figure literally caught between worlds. Meanwhile, her sizzling chemistry with Jordan set the screen ablaze.

No stranger to awards season, Steinfeld earned Best Supporting Actress nominations from the Academy Awards, Critics’ Choice and the SAG Awards, as well as a Leading Actress nomination at the BAFTAs for her role in True Grit.

You may recognise her in the Pitch Perfect sequels (yes, she sings, too) or in Disney+’s Hawkeye, where she played Kate Bishop. She also starred in the well-received whip-smart teen film The Edge of Seventeen, which led to Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Best Actress nominations. She voiced Gwen Stacy in the acclaimed animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and will be returning for the sequel Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Other projects in the pipeline include the Young Avengers television series, where she’ll be reprising her role as Kate Bishop, and Winter Games, a rom-com co-starring Miles Teller.

From the electrifying performances to the award-winning score and cinematography, Sinners proved why Ryan Coogler and his team are Hollywood powerhouses. The film’s cast and creatives brought depth, charisma and innovation to every frame, making Sinners a cultural phenomenon.
