From ‘La La Land’ to ‘Blade Runner 2049’, here are five movies in which the Canadian actor completely stole the show

There is no denying that Ryan Gosling has range. From a lovestruck romantic in The Notebook (2004) to a brooding anti-hero in The Place Beyond the Pines (2012), the 42-year-old has delivered one solid performance after another. Most recently, he’s outdone himself as Ken opposite Margot Robbie’s Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (2023), which has taken the world by storm since it released on July 21. The film, which also stars Simu Liu of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), had made more than US$1.2 billion at the global box office as of Saturday, August 19—making Barbie the second highest-grossing movie of 2023.

For his part, Gosling has received praise from critics and audiences alike for his portrayal of Ken, a bombastic, slightly ditzy and endlessly earnest figure whose character arc perfectly accentuated and complemented that of Robbie’s Barbie. Here, we revisit five other performances from Gosling that have cemented his status as a bankable Hollywood star.

1. ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ (2011)

Gosling delivered a velvet smooth performance as the slick, sweet-talking Jacob Palmer in Crazy, Stupid, Love, who unwittingly weaves himself into the Weaver family when he helps hapless dad Cal (Steve Carrell) become more of a hit with the ladies after separating from his wife and high school sweetheart, Emily (Julianne Moore). Meanwhile, Jacob also finds himself falling for Hannah, who turns out to be Cal’s and Emily’s eldest daughter. The scene in which everything comes to light will forever be one of the most hilarious and entertaining four minutes of cinema ever.

Back to Gosling. What makes this role so memorable—besides the character’s many quotable quips—is that behind his suave demeanour is a man seeking love, and his steely armour is just a way to protect himself.

2. ‘Drive’ (2011)

Arguably one of Gosling’s best roles to date is the unnamed stunt driver he plays in Drive, who crosses paths with mobsters when he falls in love with his neighbour Irene (Carey Mulligan). From his action-packed performance to his iconic costumes—including a satin jacket with scorpion embroidery and leather gloves—this is a tough-guy character through and through, and Gosling packs a punch with his icy glare and taciturn demeanour.

3. ‘Blade Runner 2049’ (2017)

This highly anticipated sequel to the 1982 sci-fi epic Blade Runner sees Gosling take on the role of K, a bioengineered humanoid (called replicant in the film) who helps the Los Angeles police hunt down rogue replicants. The story follows his desire for love and fulfilment, as he goes on a quest to understand the deeper truth behind his existence.

4. ‘La La Land’ (2018)

In La La Land, Gosling revealed to the world that he is, in fact, a triple threat and shows off his musical chops in his portrayal of jazz-obsessed Sebastian Wilder. Along with recurring co-star Emma Stone, who plays aspiring actress Mia Dolan, the pair sets off to achieve their respective dreams together, but eventually finds success apart.

The Oscar-winning soundtrack and lively dance numbers helped soften the film’s bittersweet ending, but what struck a chord with the audience was Gosling’s heartfelt longing for a life that could have been.

5. ‘Lars and the Real Girl’ (2007)

In Lars and the Real Girl, Gosling plays Lars Lindstrom, an awkwardly shy individual who finds love in Bianca, a life-sized doll he “met” on the Internet. The film, apart from being an emotional and sensitive exploration of human fragility and insecurities, is also a departure from Gosling’s image as the macho hero or the dapper love interest. Through his portrayal of socially inept Lars, Gosling showcased earnestness and vulnerability in a way that made the whole movie endearing. Aww.
