Police University is a new Korean drama that offers a slice-of-life look at a certain profession. This time, they’re shedding a light on the lives of aspiring police officers—perhaps one of the first dramas to be set in a police university. The drama is already generating buzz when its first episode aired, offering a mix of action, drama, comedy, friendship, romance and also chaos.

Portraying the realistic growing pains of youth and the clash between the new and old generation, the drama will surely relate to a lot of people—whether you’re young or young at heart. 1. The cast

Police University boasts a star-studded cast led by veteran comedy actor and host, Cha Tae-hyun. Joining him are B1A4’s Jung Jinyoung who previously worked on Love in the Moonlight and My First First Love and f(x)’s Krystal Jung who starred in Sweet & Sour and The Heirs.

Meanwhile, the supporting cast includes B.A.P’s Yoo Young-jae, notable Korean actor Lee Jong-hyuk, rookie actor Choo Yeong-woo, Live’s Kim Jong-hoon among many others.

2. The plot

Police University follows Yoo Dong-man (Cha Tae-hyun), a former detective involved in violent crimes and cybercrime. Now, he works as a professor at a police university. His students include Kang Sun-ho (Jin Young), a hacker and Oh Kang-hee (Krystal), a judoka.

Kang falls in love with Oh at first sight when they were in high school and decides to join the police academy to be near her. Becoming a police officer is Oh’s dream since she was a child.

The drama will explore as Kang and Oh strive hard to become police officers with Yoo as their teacher. Kang isn't initially fond of seeing Yoo at the university due to a past incident that entangled their lives but gradually starts to respect him as a man of justice. What started as love at first sight for Kang to join the police academy, later becomes his life's goal.

3. The crew

Police University is directed by Yoo Kwan-mo who previously worked on Woman of 9.9 Billion and Perfume—both dramas from KBS2, just like Police University. The drama will be penned by screenwriter Min Jung.

4. The release date

Police University airs every Monday to Tuesday from August 9 to October 5, 2021. It will have a total of 16 episodes and air in KBS2 as well as Viki.

5. Behind-the-scenes tidbits

Jin Young sure broke hearts as the admirable second lead in Love in the Moonlight. He played yet another second lead in Netflix’s My First First Love but this time, Jin Young is finally headlining the drama.

When asked why he chose to be part of the series, the idol-turned-actor said that “the subtleness of my character and the different plot of the series is what motivated me to star in the drama”. He also added that he’s quite similar to his character in that they’re both dedicated when they want to do something but at the same time also has a shy personality.

Meanwhile, Jin Young’s co-star and fellow idol-turned-star Krystal Jung is also showcasing another side of her. Besides her notable roles in romance shows such as The Heirs and movies such as Sweet & Sour, she showcased her ability when she played a military officer in Search. We can expect to see a similar vibe here.
