Why Patti LuPone’s June 2026 Hong Kong debut is the hottest ticket in town
On June 3, 2026, LuPone takes the stage at the Grand Theatre of the Xiqu Centre in West Kowloon for her long-awaited Hong Kong debut, performing as part of the WestK Cabaret Festival. Her show, A Life in Notes, is a 120-minute musical memoir tracing her extraordinary life from a 1950s Long Island childhood to five decades of global stardom. Tickets are priced from HK$560 to HK$880, and if her sell-out history is any indication, they will not last long.
‘Evita’ (1979) to ‘Les Misérables’ (1985): the iconic roles Patti LuPone originated
Before Madonna, before any revival, there was Patti LuPone. In 1979, she originated Eva Perón in Evita on Broadway, winning her first Tony Award alongside co-star Mandy Patinkin (Che)—with whom she made a silent pact to support each other throughout the gruelling run. Six years later, she crossed the Atlantic to originate Fantine in the RSC’s Les Misérables (1985) in London. Her heartbreaking performance as Fantine, along with her simultaneous run as Moll in The Cradle Will Rock, earned her the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
The ‘Andrew Lloyd Webber Memorial Pool’: the story behind her most legendary comeback
After originating Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard (1993) in London to critical acclaim, Patti LuPone was promised the Broadway transfer—only to be replaced by Glenn Close. She discovered the news not from her management, but via a gossip column. And so LuPone destroyed her dressing room in legendary fashion, then sued Lloyd Webber’s company for breach of contract. Music director Joseph Thalken leads on piano, joined by Brad Phillips on strings, creating an intimate, chamber-like atmosphere that allows LuPone’s voice and storytelling to take centre stage. Directed by Scott Wittman, with a text crafted by Jeffrey Richman, the show performs once only: June 3, 2026, at 8:45pm, at the Grand Theatre, Xiqu Centre. Expect showstoppers, candour and the kind of hard-won wisdom that only a life truly lived on the stage can produce.
