From sweet Choi Taek to prickly Prince Lee Young, here are some of Park Bo-gum’s standout roles

Park Bo-gum has become a beloved figure in Korean drama, most known for his roles as the golden boy of Ssangmun-dong in Reply 1988 and the charming crown prince in Love in the Moonlight. His portrayal of these characters feels almost like typecasting, as he’s widely believed to embody their warmth and integrity. He hasn’t earned the nickname “Nation’s Man of Good Influence” for nothing.

After skyrocketing to fame, he has also become one of South Korea’s top endorsers, inspiring terms like “Park Bo-gum effect” and “Park Bo-gum magic” to describe his influence on brand success. However, he is best known as a powerhouse actor, celebrated for his versatile and compelling performances across genres.

In one of his earliest roles, Park Bo-gum played Choi Taek, a shy, gentle and kind-hearted baduk champion. Taek is considered the golden boy of the Ssangmun-dong neighbourhood, admired not just for his sweet nature but also for his intelligence.

But what Choi Taek is most remembered for is being one-third of one of the most polarising K-drama love triangles of all time, alongside Lee Hye-ri’s Choi Daek-sun and Ryu Jun-yeol’s Jung-hwan. Until now, fans are divided into two camps: Team Taek vs Team Jung-hwan, and still argue about whom they think Deok-sun should have ended up with.

This is undoubtedly the role that brought Park Bo-gum global recognition. As Prince Lee Young, he showcased his talent for playing romantic comedy leads, which is only fitting as he is often referred to as the “Nation’s Crown Prince”.

His charisma and vulnerability made the young prince relatable, and he brought a playfulness to the role that balanced out the more serious aspects of the character. Viewers also praised his chemistry with co-star Kim Yoo-jung. Together they gave the relationship authenticity and depth.

His nuanced portrayal earned him several prestigious awards including the Baeksang for Best TV Actor, and won him legions of fans worldwide.

In his first role after completing his mandatory military service, Park Bo-gum played a struggling model who has set his sights on becoming an actor. Audiences and critics alike praised his acting, zeroing in on his ability to convey the struggles and emotional turmoil of an aspiring actor.

From the innocent and charming characters he played in the past, he graduated to playing characters that felt more grounded in reality. Hye-Jun was someone you knew or would have probably met—a young man with big dreams, grappling with real-life setbacks. And he brought complexity, nuance and thoughtfulness to the role.

Playing the first human clone can be tricky but Park Bo-gum succeeded in striking a balance between Seo Bok’s childlike innocence and his feral rage. He brought great humanity during Seo Bok’s vulnerable moments but was terrifying whenever Seo Bok unleashed his psychic powers.

Critics were impressed by his versatility and maturity, noting how he was able to shed his romantic-lead persona and take on a role that required more psychological depth. They also praised his chemistry with his more seasoned co-star Gong Yoo, highlighting the credible relationship they built between their characters.

In Wonderland, a movie of interwoven narratives, Park Bo-gum joined a stellar cast that includes Tang Wei, Bae Suzy, Jung Yu-mi, Choi Woo-shik and Gong Yoo.

He played two versions of Bae Suzy’s boyfriend Park Tae-joo: the perfect AI boyfriend stationed in a satellite in outer space and the real Tae-joo, struggling with his recovery after years in a coma. Their storyline explored themes of grief, loss and the nature of love.

AI Tae-joo is the ideal boyfriend. He is cheerful and accommodating, caring and attentive. In contrast, the real Tae-joo is melancholic, emotionally distant and often confused. Park Bo-gum skillfully portrayed both versions, grounding the character in his emotional connection with Bae Suzy’s Jung-in.

Park Bo-gum has made a name for himself playing characters with hearts of gold. And he does so again as Gwan-sik, the loyal and devoted husband to IU’s Ae-sun in When Life Gives You Tangerines. But this time around, he infuses the character with quiet gravitas.

There’s a maturity to how he balances Gwan-sik’s strength and tenderness, making him a believable character and someone we feel deeply for. His chemistry with IU is compelling, complementing Ae-sun’s firecracker personality with Gwan-sik’s unwavering steadfastness.

In When Life Gives You Tangerines, Park Bo-gum demonstrates how much he has grown as an actor. He may be portraying someone we’ve seen him play before, but he has brought something fresh to the role.
