Up-to-the-minute controversies about the Jeffrey Dahmer Story for those who are just catching up

Monsters are generally referred to as fictional characters or mythical creatures in legendary tales, paranormal experiences and unnatural activities. These are often the departed, the unseen, the unexplainable, the bizarre and the surreal. But that is not the case for British actor Jared Harris, as he remarked that the true horror lies within the living ones: “The scariest monsters are human beings and what we will do to each other.” This is accurately relative to Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. The true crime series took the number one spot in its release last September and almost three months after, Jeffrey Dahmer’s name is still making its way to the headlines. What’s the deal with Dahmer’s real-life story transforming into a big hit? And why does the public have more voices about this documentary than usual?

If you haven’t had the time to see it yet, or even research about it despite the recurring attention and opinion this most-watched series has accumulated, Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was an American born in the 60s and died in 1994 with a vast number of records as a spree killer and sexual predator. He is infamous as the Milwaukee Monster who wielded terror by physically tearing apart and murdering 17 boys and men during his years. Dahmer’s crimes were ghastly in parallel to unsightly as they are to watch even through mere representation due to his formidable acts of necrophilia and cannibalism. Following that kind of plot, it was surely enough for docuseries enthusiasts to rejoice in anticipation of how the show can be exceptional and for the couch potatoes to cosy up with roughly an hour's length for every instalment. Albeit, in the perspective of movie critics or people who make the most out of every translation, the latter begs to differ.

By hindsight, nothing sets The Jeffrey Dahmer Story apart from other Western serial killer documentaries. There are other stories that are as brutal and gruesome as Dahmer’s like Ted Bundy’s and John Wayne Gacy’s but Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story presentation was one of its extremely sensational crime series yet. Initially, the popularity grew from the villain lead’s performance. Evan Peters did not just characterise Dahmer, but he embodied his whole twisted persona in a perfect resemblance. The way he acted throughout the series is set to send chills down your spine and definitely disturb your thoughts. A lot of reviews are even chanting for Peters to snag the Emmy’s Best Actor award.

In addition, all the show’s glory wouldn’t be possible without film director Ryan Murphy and co-creator Ian Brennan’s expertise in featuring all the details of Dahmer’s story. It is hard to imagine that the masterminds behind the musical drama Glee are the geniuses behind the anthology.

But if we’re talking about unexpected revelations and circling back to the main subject, we’ve established that Dahmer’s narrative is sufficiently noteworthy for the true crime genre. However, what made the communities throw backlash and raise eyebrows are several societal issues that were illuminated by the television show. The commotion of whether Dahmer’s story should be out in the open and be retold is a big issue in questioning one’s sense of justice and beliefs, sparking ethical discussions.

First off in the story, Dahmer’s victims are a majority of black and gay men. As if we need any more reminders of the indifference towards race and gender that we’ve globally struggled with for too long, Netflix regarded the series under their platforms’ LGBTQ+ category. Naturally, the former enraged the community and called out the streaming giant through social media by implying a wrong description of what LGBTQ+ is all about. There was no statement from Netflix on this but eventually, the message came across Netflix and they quietly delisted it from the classification.

Prodding further on the emotional effect of the documentation, the American newspaper Washington Post exposed negative impacts on the families and close relatives of the aggrieved as a result of the spinoff in their article. Everyone has ghosts in their past, and if your history is inclined to this notorious man, you’ll do anything to keep it buried but instead, you witness it relived. Comments on morality addressed by the concerned and curious to the production team were along the lines of “Did they ask permission first? Are they involved and informed? Is it acceptable to produce a show from this?”

Limits were absolutely probed, and debates went over and beyond for the operation and the involvement of the police has been included. A lot of the audience shares their insights and experiences, commenting on how they had their fair share of similar encounters and familiarity with such cases. The tragic truth as they coin it on the reality of today’s authorities.

Halloween was the recent highlight of the Dahmer effect. It was reported that profiting from, and putting on a Dahmer-like outfit became prohibited due to the uproar that follows it. Who would want to see a walking trauma, asking for treats on your doorstep? And if all of those are sheer publicity or pure satire, there is inevitably that very thin line between praise and disappointment. What are your thoughts on these, Netflix streamers?
