Following the announcement, Netflix Korea’s Director of Content said, “We’re excited to announce the production of Culinary Class Wars: Season 2, thanks to the amazing fan response both in Korea and globally. For the uninitiated, Culinary Class Wars is a cooking competition where 80 beloved local cooks (the “Black Spoon” contestants) go head-to-head with 20 renowned celebrity chefs (the “White Spoon” contestants) for a shot at culinary fame and respect. Think Physical: 100 with a dash of Squid Game–but for chefs. “Black Spoon” chef Napoli Matfia—née Kwon Sung-jun—crossed class lines to win the first season, pocketing the prize money of KRW300 million (about US$225,000).

Under the watchful eyes of judges restauranteur Paik Jong-won and chef Anh Sung-jae of the three-starred Michelin restaurant Mosu Seoul (the country’s sole Michelin three-starred restaurant), the cooks and chefs are thrown into survival mode, fighting apron-to-apron while having to face kitchen drama and politics, challenging ingredients, and brutal taste evaluations.
