1. Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe’s death in 1962 remains one of the most infamous celebrity deaths in Hollywood history. Officially ruled as a “probable suicide” due to an overdose of barbiturates, the superstar’s ties to President John F Kennedy and his brother Robert have fuelled speculation about foul play. Some believe she knew too much about political affairs, leading to a cover-up, while others think her death was the tragic result of personal struggles. The lack of thorough investigation only adds to the enduring intrigue.

Actress Natalie Wood drowned under suspicious circumstances in 1981 while on a yacht trip with her husband, Robert Wagner, and actor Christopher Walken. Reports of a heated argument, conflicting witness statements and bruises found on her body led the case to be reopened decades later. Though Wagner has denied involvement, investigators considered him a “person of interest” in 2018. However, by 2022, detectives said they ran out of leads.
What makes her death even more mysterious is that when she was young, a gypsy told her mother that the West Side Story star would die in dark water. Wood had been afraid of water all her life.
3. Elizabeth Short (The Black Dahlia)

The gruesome 1947 murder of aspiring actress Elizabeth Short, infamously known as the Black Dahlia, remains one of Los Angeles’ most chilling celebrity deaths. Found mutilated and bisected, her case has spawned countless theories, books and movies, but no confirmed killer. Some speculate a link to a surgeon due to the precision of her wounds, while others believe a Hollywood insider was responsible. The case, which is still unsolved, remains as haunting as ever.
4. George Reeves

The original Superman, George Reeves, was found dead from a gunshot wound in 1959. While officially ruled a suicide, inconsistencies—such as the lack of gunpowder burns and multiple bullet holes in the room—have led many to suspect foul play. Some theories suggest mob connections, romantic entanglements or even an accidental shooting covered up by powerful Hollywood figures. His family and friends were adamant that the gunshot wound was not self-inflicted, while others have claimed that the actor was depressed due to his dwindling career.
5. Gene Hackman

Gene Hackman, the legendary actor known for The French Connection, Unforgiven and for playing the villain to Christopher Reeve's Superman, was found dead at 95 in his Santa Fe home alongside his wife, Betsy Arakawa, in what has become one of Hollywood’s most puzzling tragedies. Arakawa reportedly passed days before Hackman, with autopsies revealing she succumbed to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease linked to rodent exposure, while Hackman suffered from hypertensive cardiovascular disease, complicated by Alzheimer’s. Their bodies were discovered after days of unanswered calls, with two of their dogs found alive and one deceased, adding an eerie element to the mystery.
6. Thelma Todd

Actress Thelma Todd, known for her comedic roles in the 1930s, was discovered dead in her car in 1935, allegedly from carbon monoxide poisoning. While the official ruling was an accidental death, rumours of mob ties, an abusive lover and a staged scene persist. Todd’s lucrative café and connections to Hollywood’s elite make this case one of Tinseltown’s enduring enigmas.
7. Brittany Murphy

In 2009, actress Brittany Murphy’s sudden death at age 32 was ruled as pneumonia complicated by anaemia and prescription drug use. However, when her husband, Simon Monjack, died under eerily similar circumstances just months later, theories of toxic mould, poisoning and even government involvement emerged. The bizarre nature of her decline still leaves fans suspicious.
8. Bruce Lee

Bruce Lee’s shocking death at just 32 in 1973 was attributed to cerebral oedema, allegedly caused by an allergic reaction to painkillers. However, many believe something more sinister was at play, including theories of triad involvement, poisoning and even the so-called “Lee family curse”, later linked to his son, Brandon Lee’s tragic death on the set of The Crow.

Brandon Lee’s 1993 death while filming The Crow is still surrounded by spooky speculation. A prop gun was improperly loaded, leading to a fatal gunshot wound. Some believe it was a freak accident, while others think there was deliberate negligence or even a targeted attack. The fact that his father, Bruce Lee, also died young only adds to the mystery.
What's even more hairraising? The 1993 biopic Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story showed a metaphorical demon that haunted the star since he was born. There was even a scene of the older Lee's tombstone. By the end, the demon gives up on Bruce and heads toward Brandon. The younger Lee died two months after the film was released.
