Fresh from conjuring spells in Wicked and winning hearts—and an Oscar—with Everything Everywhere All At Once, Michelle Yeoh is now donning surgical scrubs for what may become her next blockbuster franchise. The Surgeon, currently being shopped to buyers at Cannes by Legendary Entertainment’s independent film label 193, casts Yeoh as an unlikely but deadly action heroine who wields scalpels like weapons. While the release date is still under wraps, here’s everything we know so far.

1. The premise: Scalpels as lethal weapons
In The Surgeon, Yeoh plays a retired surgeon who is abducted and forced to operate on a mysterious patient. But her captors soon realise they’ve made a grave mistake: after 35 years in the operating room, she’s as precise and unflinching with a scalpel as any assassin.
According to the film’s synopsis, viewers can expect an “explosive and brutal confrontation” delivered in a “visual style that defies anything you’ve seen before.” Imagine John Wick—if Wick traded firearms for surgical tools and the fight scenes took place in an operating theatre.
2. The director: From real-life operating room to film set
At the helm is writer-director Roshan Sethi, a practicing oncologist turned filmmaker whose real-life medical background lends authenticity to the project. Sethi began his screen career as a staff writer on Code Black and went on to co-create The Resident, which ran for six seasons.
When Yeoh officially signed on, Sethi posted on Instagram that his mother celebrated by bringing a coconut to the temple—a traditional ritual marking auspicious events.
3. The star: Why Michelle Yeoh was the only choice
Patrick Wachsberger, CEO of 193 film company, told reporters that they only had eyes for Yeoh, saying that “She blends grace and power, bringing emotional depth to even the most physical sequences.”
At 62, Yeoh remains one of cinema's most striking action leads, having built her career on physical roles that blend balletic grace with combat skills. With an Oscar win for Everything Everywhere All At Once and credits spanning from Crazy Rich Asians to Wicked to the upcoming Avatar sequels, Yeoh brings both artistic credibility and global appeal to the project.
4. The vision: Not just a film, but a franchise
Produced by Basil Iwanyk and Patrick Wachsberger—whose credits include John Wick and Sicario—The Surgeon is being positioned as the launchpad for a new franchise. The concept offers a unique spin: a seasoned medical professional whose skills are repurposed for survival and justice.
The producers highlighted the strength of the character created by Sethi, describing her as layered and deeply compelling—qualities they believed would appeal to Yeoh. With a team experienced in building globally successful action franchises, The Surgeon is being developed with long-term potential in mind.
