Learn more about the much-anticipated cultural event of the year that celebrates music, arts, and the oceans

Music festivals are more than just concerts. They are a celebration—a reunion of long-time music fans and an act of welcoming new family members. Fête de la Musique Philippines, now in its 29th year of assembling musicophiles and people who deserve a night of just fun, aims to take it one step a notch in this edition. On June 16 to 25, the festival will showcase some of the country’s best, freshest, and most diverse acts in the local music scene with live plays nationwide, while doing it all for a cause.

With the theme MerSea—a play on the French words mer (sea) and merci (thank you)—Fête 2023 expresses its gratitude for 29 years of Franco-Filipino cultural relations and contributes to furthering ocean conservation efforts.

“More than just merry-making, we also seek to use our collective voice as Fête de la Musique PH as a platform for causes close to our heart,” says Giselle Tomimbang, President of B-Side Productions and co-producer of the festival.

Additionally, 10 per cent of the collection per photographer are “rares”.  These photos will have an augmented reality treatment enjoyed when viewed with the app Artivive.

Inspired by both the World Oceans Day theme as well as the theme for this year’s World Environment Day, which invites everyone to join the global effort to #BeatPlasticPollution, MerSea will serve as the springboard for activities under its partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Philippines and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for the 2023 Environment Month celebrations.

There will be coastal clean-up and tree-planting activities, particularly in Metro Manila, Siargao, and Cebu. Various youth-focused learning opportunities in close collaboration with the UNDP Youth Programme, DENR advocates, and youth-led civil service organizations will also push through.

Partnership with DOT

This year’s festivities will continue its #FeteFromMyIsland theme from its virtual edition in 2021 in partnership with the Department of Tourism (DOT).

Destination Stages will be across the country: Albay, Baguio, Baler, Cebu, El Nido, Laguna, Pampanga, Palawan, Siargao, Tagaytay, and Zambales. Except for Siargao, which is hosting its stage on June 21, all these destinations shall be celebrating on June 24.

Additionally, Fête’s collaboration with SONIK Philippines, Institut Français, and the French Ministry of Europe & Foreign Affairs will birth the first-ever Sonik Sessions Fête: Music Export France, a conference happening on June 16. It seeks to educate both the business and artist sides of the music ecosystem.

All these activities and forged partnerships are for the improvement of the environment, and using a music festival to help bolster the cause is the icing on the cake. “In spite of all our differences, music—just like the oceans—connects us humans with each other,” says Xavier Leroux, executive director of Alliançe Française de Manille.
