Yulo would perform around The Bowery, Pablo, Kampai, Futur:st and Mijo among others. But it was the gig at UNKNWN.Fiesta with Miguel Santiago, also known as Saint Guel, which he deems most memorable.

“[Music is the] most accessible therapist and an ever-dependable consoler,” says the DJ.

It all began when Yulo heard music from the Nineties. “I grew up listening to my siblings’ music, and a lot of that was [the Nineties] alternative rock. From there I jumped from genre to genre until I arrived at what I play now,” he shares. “If I had to choose one that was incredibly formative, it would be Taylor McFerrin’s Early Riser, the entire album. I first heard it live in concert, at the right place, with the right people, in the right state of mind. I had just started DJing too. It still hits just as hard today!”

Yulo also makes mixes and uploads them on Mixcloud, an online music streaming service, under the username @jdyulo. The latest mix found on the profile is a catchy three-hour mix he created for an event. He explains, “I was given free rein, so it’s reflective of my current taste and sound.” He has also found a few jams that he’s eager to share. “Just recently, I got back from a trip where I did a bunch of digging, and came home with a stack of soulful oldies. These are my favourites from that selection, plus a few contemporary additions.”

  • Roy Ayers - Baby Doll
  • Loleatta Holloway - Cry to Me
  • Quincy Jones - Gula Matari
  • Monk Higgins - These Days Are Filled With You
  • Claudja Barry - Take It Easy
  • Lessette Wilson - Corrida (Ai No Corrida)
  • Brian Jackson - Little Orphan Boy (Two Soul Fusion Extended Remix)
  • Spiller - Groovejet (If This Ain't Love) (Breakbot & Irfane Extended Remix)
