The global film community is in mourning following the peaceful passing of legendary Hong Kong film producer and executive Nansun Shi, who died on July 13, 2026, at the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital. Aged 75, the veteran trailblazer succumbed to multiple organ failure following a battle with immune system complications.

Affectionately known within the industry as the “golden producer”, Shi was a revolutionary force who co-founded Film Workshop and served as a crucial bridge between Asian cinema and international audiences. Her immense contributions earned her a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards.

1. ‘A Chinese Ghost Story’ (1987-91)

Produced through Film Workshop, this supernatural romantic series completely revolutionised Hong Kong’s fantasy filmmaking. Blending traditional folklore, martial arts action, comedy and high-stakes romance, the series created a blueprint for Asian fantasy cinema. Shi’s peerless administrative and production acumen gave co-directors Tsui Hark and Ching Siu-tung the creative freedom to deploy innovative special effects and ethereal visual styles that had never been seen in the region.

Marking an ambitious leap into the Western market, Double Team remains a fascinating and unique snapshot of late-90s action cinema. Widely credited with revitalising the entire Hong Kong film industry during a severe economic and creative slump, Infernal Affairs is a masterpiece of modern crime noir. The psychological thriller tracks the parallel lives of an undercover cop and a triad mole.

Having joined Media Asia as vice president, Shi played a pivotal role behind the scenes of this historic production and its subsequent trilogy. Released during the 2025 Chinese New Year, this epic historical martial arts film marked a triumphant and visually dazzling return to the classic wuxia genre. Based on Jin Yong’s iconic literary works, the movie stars young icons Xiao Zhan and Zhuang Dafei under the direction of Tsui.

Acting as producer alongside Sony Pictures, Shi showcased that her distribution and marketing mastery remained unmatched even in her final years.
