From the return of Clockenflap to Art Basel Hong Kong and its international literary festival, here are some of the exciting things happening this month

As Hong Kong continues to ease its Covid-19 restrictions—the latest one being the end of the mask mandate—the city is slowly pickup back up its pre-pandemic rhythm with some long-awaited and much-missed events.

From international festivals and world-renowned exhibitions to premiere of spectacles as well as some of the more niche celebrations, if you’re eager to get out but don’t know where to go or what to do, here are some of our recommendations for the month of March.

Clockenflap

When: March 3-5

Where: Central Harbourfront 

What: It’s finally happening: Hong Kong’s very own Clockenflap is making a much awaited comeback in the city after a four-year hiatus. And the excitement is undeniable, because for the first time in its 15-year history, weekend passes for the event have sold out. From headliner Arctic Monkeys and rising K-pop collective Balming Tiger to local talents like DJ Mengzy and Cehryl, it’s going to be an eclectic and electrifying weekend.

Art Basel Hong Kong

When: March 23-25

Where: Various locations 

What: Art Basel Hong Kong is back and for its biggest iteration since 2019. More than 170 galleries from 32 countries and territories will have their artworks displayed across two storeys at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Art Central 2023

When: March 22-25

Where: Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre

What: Taking place alongside Art Basel Hong Kong, Art Central is returning with a varied selection of galleries, which will showcase paintings, sculptures, large-scale installations, mixed media work, performances and more.

HKT x WESTK POPFEST

When: March 22-April 2nd 

Where: West Kowloon Cultural District

What: West Kowloon has curated a vibrant programme for their 10-day festival, HKT x WESTK POPFEST, which will feature more than 70 acts to help you discover (or rediscover) some of Hong Kong’s best pop music. Get ready for both indoor and outdoor performances, and exciting crossovers and collaborations that will include Keung Tong and Anson Lo from Mirror, Merry Lamb Lamb, Celryl, Matt Force, Room 307, Kiri T and so much more.

Coco Chanel: The life of a fashion icon

When: March 24-26

Where: Lyric Theatre, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts 

What: Acclaimed Belgian-Colombian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa created this original piece for the Hong Kong Ballet, in which you will discover the complex life of the 20th century’s most intriguing fashion designer and icon.

Hong Kong International Literary Festival 2023

When: March 6-12

Where: Various locations

What: This year, the week-long festival has prepared more than 100 events and invited more than 70 international and local speakers to help inspire budding writers. The festival will include talks, workshops, walking tours, reading and more for those who live for literature.

28th ifva festival

When: March 2-11 

Where: Louis Koo Cinema, Hong Kong Arts Centre

What: Founded by the Hong Kong Arts Centre in 1995, the ifva festival is coming back in 2023 and will showcase short films, animations and media artworks from Hong Kong as well as other Asian cultures from the region.

Hong Kong Art festival

When: February 17-March 18

Where: Various locations

What: If you haven’t had the chance to check it out yet, the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which is celebrating its 51st anniversary this year, still has an impressive line-up of artists, ballet troupes, orchestras, dancers, conductors, pianists and singers performing until mid-March.
