Inside the HBO Max ‘Harry Potter’ teaser trailer: cast, key scenes and highlights

One of the earliest shots in the teaser trailer for HBO Max’s Harry Potter reboot shows the staircase at Privet Drive and Uncle Vernon (Daniel Rigby) reading the newspaper in the kitchen. There’s new wallpaper on the walls, but for the most part, the layout of the Dursley home looks similar to the one in 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

The cupboard under the stairs also shares key details from the one Daniel Radcliffe’s Harry was shoved into in the original films, including the little cat-flap on the door. If anything, the HBO Max version appears dingier, grittier and more cramped.

In the teaser trailer, you also get to see Harry Potter in muggle school, facing off against his cousin Dudley Dursley (Amos Kitson) and his thugs. The scene not only introduces Dudley, but also informs audiences of the dynamics of their relationship, highlighting Harry’s many struggles at the Dursleys.

The narration at the beginning of the trailer—reminding Harry of how un-special he is—is courtesy of Aunt Petunia (Bel Powley), who is later seen hacking away at poor Harry’s unruly head of hair.

The scene depicting Harry Potter receiving his Hogwarts acceptance letter is almost shot-for-shot similar to the scene in the original movie—Harry’s shocked expression at receiving mail and the close-up of the back of the envelope with his address, including “The Cupboard under the Stairs”.

The next scene shows a tender moment between Harry and Hogwarts groundskeeper and gentle giant Rubeus Hagrid (Nick Frost) talking about Harry’s late parents while on the Underground. One would guess they’re headed to Diagon Alley to shop for some school supplies.

The best part about the next scene in the teaser is the Hedwig sighting! Harry Potter’s snowy white owl sits on top of his suitcase as Harry runs full speed ahead toward Platform 9 and 3/4.

As Harry peeks out the window from the Hogwarts Express, he sees Molly Weasley (Katherine Parkinson) giving her son Ron—Harry’s future best friend—a tight hug. It’s hard to miss mother and son with their distinct Weasley locks.

Ready for some deja vu? The shot of the Hogwarts Express arriving at Hogwarts may look familiar to fans of the films, as the location and setting are nearly identical.

Minerva McGonagall (Janet McTeer) welcomes the new students to Hogwarts. Wearing her half-moon glasses and stylish hat, there’s something recognisable about her look. It’s hard not to wonder if it’s paying homage to the late Maggie Smith.

Looks like the Sorting Hat got a glow-up for the HBO Max Harry Potter reboot! In the original films, he looked a little worse for wear. Here, he is shiny and spiffy.

The familiar Ollivander line “I think we must expect great things from you…” is passed from the late John Hurt in the original Harry Potter films to Anton Lesser in the reboot. Audiences may recognise Lesser, who comes from two other IPs—Game of Thrones and Star Wars via Andor. 

Looking like a proper medieval castle, fans are treated to a tour of Hogwarts—from hallways and classrooms to the Great Hall and the Gryffindor common room.

Draco Malfoy (Lox Pratt) also makes an appearance, surrounded by Crabbe, Goyle and Pansy Parkinson.

There’s plenty of Quidditch scenes, from the Nimbus 2000 and a shot of Ron and Hermione cheering from the stands to Harry walking into the snowy pitch and the iconic shot of the back of his Quidditch robe.

Those looking for Severus Snape (Paapa Essiedu) and Albus Dumbledore (John Lithgow, barely recognisable under the hat, spectacles and flowing white beard) crumbs will find quick shots of them near the end of the trailer. Why Dumbledore is seen holding what looks like a tuning fork is anybody’s guess.

The teaser trailer for the HBO Max Harry Potter reboot features the main trio heavily. They’re seen walking the hallways of Hogwarts, playing in the snow, and roughhousing in the Great Hall and Hogwarts Express. Ten points to Gryffindor if you spot the soot on Ron’s nose!

The title card that shows up at the end of the trailer reveals that the first season is based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The creators have opted to go with the UK title of the books instead of the American one—Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Even more surprising is the release date. Although people were expecting a 2027 debut, the reboot is arriving Christmas 2026 instead.

The HBO Max Harry Potter teaser trailer offers a revealing glimpse into the direction of the highly anticipated reboot. Striking a balance between familiar and fresh, nostalgia and new, it is looking to recapture the magic for a whole new generation.
