Giving a stellar performance on screen might be different from running a business, but Gigi Ma has channelled the skills learnt in her first passion to thrive in her next
With a successful acting career spanning 23 years, Gigi Ma (née Lai) is one of the most recognisable faces in Hong Kong’s entertainment scene. Even though the movie star retired in 2008, fans will remember her prowess in War and Beauty (2004), The Gem of Life (2008) and more across films and TV dramas.
Since then, the prolific thespian and mother of three has turned her attention to the beauty industry, garnering an impressive reputation as the CEO of Miricor, a company that offers medical aesthetic treatments under three brands: CosMax, VITAE and XOVĒ.
We sat down with Ma to talk about her career evolution, her flourishing beauty empire, her motto for success, and, of course, the lessons she has learnt along the way.

What inspired you to start your own beauty business?
At first, I only planned to take over my brother’s beauty clinic. Though I’ve always had a passion for skincare, I never thought of venturing into the industry myself.
However, as I started coming up with creative ideas and getting a grasp on the numbers, I gradually got enthusiastic about running my own business, collaborating with my team and creating my brand.
Has your own experience of using beauty products informed your business decisions?
I started this business to specifically provide quality solutions to Asian skins’ needs. As a beauty enthusiast who enjoys experimenting with skincare, I often found it frustrating to search for that elusive “perfect product” only to encounter sensitivity while trying it out.
