Giving a stellar performance on screen might be different from running a business, but Gigi Ma has channelled the skills learnt in her first passion to thrive in her next

With a successful acting career spanning 23 years, Gigi Ma (née Lai) is one of the most recognisable faces in Hong Kong’s entertainment scene. Even though the movie star retired in 2008, fans will remember her prowess in War and Beauty (2004), The Gem of Life (2008) and more across films and TV dramas.

Since then, the prolific thespian and mother of three has turned her attention to the beauty industry, garnering an impressive reputation as the CEO of Miricor, a company that offers medical aesthetic treatments under three brands: CosMax, VITAE and XOVĒ.

We sat down with Ma to talk about her career evolution, her flourishing beauty empire, her motto for success, and, of course, the lessons she has learnt along the way.

What inspired you to start your own beauty business?

At first, I only planned to take over my brother’s beauty clinic. Though I’ve always had a passion for skincare, I never thought of venturing into the industry myself.

However, as I started coming up with creative ideas and getting a grasp on the numbers, I gradually got enthusiastic about running my own business, collaborating with my team and creating my brand.

Has your own experience of using beauty products informed your business decisions?

I started this business to specifically provide quality solutions to Asian skins’ needs. As a beauty enthusiast who enjoys experimenting with skincare, I often found it frustrating to search for that elusive “perfect product” only to encounter sensitivity while trying it out.

So, when it came to creating products, I focused on developing formulas based on my own needs and what I would want as a customer. During the research process, I also asked my celebrity friends for opinion and got feedback from industry experts to ensure high quality.

With so many options available on shelves, the process of hunting for the right product for your skin can be overwhelming. I’ve noticed that there aren’t enough solutions in the market that take Hong Kong’s humid climate into consideration, and this is part of the reason why I launched my own brands. I wanted to bring [Hong Kong] people a beauty experience that’s tailor-made for them. So, it’s rewarding to see customers benefit from our formulas.

Has your acting career influenced you as an entrepreneur?

I’m grateful for my acting career because it has made me a stronger, more perseverant person. I learnt so much as an actor—be it building my network or keeping a positive mindset at work. Things change quickly in the entertainment industry; there would be times when I wouldn’t get enough rest during a busy schedule, but it teaches one to be patient, to pivot and find solutions. Being an actor was not easy, but at the end of the day, it was rewarding.

Coming from an entertainment background with zero knowledge on how to run a business, things were tough at first, but the resilience I had as an actor stayed with me and kept me going. If I were to sum up my motto, it would be to “keep learning, keep growing and keep succeeding”.

What hopes or expectations do you have for your children?

My children don’t have to get perfect scores at school. It would be great if they achieve academic success but I would rather they learn how to be a kind and strong person. I hope to instil in them a positive mindset so they can confidently face life’s ups and downs.

How do you define success? What’s next for you?

For  me, success is the result of passion, hard work and persistence. I’m thankful for everything I have and I’m proud of myself for being able to grow in a different field after leaving behind the world of acting. I hope to keep learning and motivating myself so that I can grow my business by researching for new skincare products and beauty technologies.
