The Filipino actress spills the details of her upcoming projects in Hollywood and beyond

Out of the shadows and into the limelight, there's no stopping Dolly de Leon and her rapidly ongoing rise to international fame. The Golden Globe and BAFTA-nominated actress revealed the details of her upcoming film and television projects during a dinner held last November 21, 2023, at Las Casas de Acuzar in Quezon City. Soon, fans can watch her share the screen with recognisable Hollywood names.

The effervescent De Leon arrived in a navy blue ensemble by local designer Renz Reyes, with her hair in a bleached bob and an endearing smile as she greeted eager admirers. The actress had just wrapped up filming a new project in Chicago three weeks prior. The film, Ghostlight, will premiere on January 20, 2024, at the Sundance Film Festival. She also disclosed that she has enlisted new talent representation, having signed with CreaZion Studios to manage all her projects in the Philippines.

Additionally, De Leon is due to grace the screen in Grand Theft Lotto, her second American production, joining a lineup that includes the likes of John Cena, Awkwafina, Simu Liu, Sean William Scott and Sam Asghari. She will also star in the second season of the Hulu Original psychological drama Nine Perfect Strangers with Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman, Murray Bartlett of The White Lotus fame, and legendary Norwegian dramatist Liv Ullmann.

Just a few days before the event at Las Casas, De Leon received the Arts and Culture Award at the Tatler Ball for pushing Filipino representation towards the global forefront. Her rousing speech captivated the audience as she dedicated her award to smaller-known but hard-working actors who continue to seek out roles despite a competitive environment and lack of fair pay.

2023 proved to be a challenging year for those in the film and television industry, as the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) went on a massive strike from July to November of that year. This dispute saw filmmakers on the picket lines, fighting to protect the livelihoods of working actors and performers. It is a cause that resonates with De Leon, as she continues to advocate for actors’ rights. “It's been a thankless job. No one ever really pats you on the back.” The actress, who has been in the industry for 33 years, credits Tatler for the considerable privilege of recognition.

De Leon reveals her motivation to be a storyteller. It is the challenge of stepping into the shoes of another character seems to be the driving force behind the actress’s ambitions, no matter how impossible it seems to manifest in real life–and no matter how difficult it is to conform to such a demanding industry.

She relays, “Giving these characters a voice is an honour.” When asked about her sources of inspiration, she cites her personal growth and the mere act of being human. “It sounds egotistical, but I find inspiration in discovering more about myself. That’s the goal.”

Awards and accolades aside, De Leon would simply like to be revered as a kind person. “I hope that people just remember me as someone who helps to bring the best out of everyone, who cares about the Philippines, [as a woman] who just loves what she does,”

There’s no doubt that De Leon has firmly etched her name as a household icon. The stage is set for the next act in her remarkable story, and we stand eager to witness what lies ahead.
