The Disney+ series is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang

Excitement flew over the air when it was announced that the genre-hopping action-comedy graphic novel, American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang was getting a live-action adaptation. Now, Disney unveiled the star-studded cast of the original series.

It features Tatler Asia’s Most Influential honouree Michelle Yeoh, Ben Wang from MacGyver, two-time International Emmy Award nominee Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han from Mortal Kombat, Daniel Wu from Reminiscence, Ke Huy Quan from Finding Ohana, former Taekwando champion Jim Liu and Syndey Taylor from Just Add Magic.

American Born Chinese tells the story of Jin Wang, an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life. When he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods. The action-packed coming-of-age adventure will explore identity, culture and family.

Yeoh will be playing Guanyin, an unassuming auntie who helpers her nephew, Wei-Chen navigate the challenges of American high school all while maintaining her secret identity as the all-powerful Buddhist bodhisattva of Compassion.

Ben Wang will take on the titular role of Jin Wang, an American teen whose parents immigrated from Taiwan. He’s struggling to carve out exactly who he’s supposed to be socially and culturally.

Yann Yann will be Jin’s mom, Christine Wang, a strong-willed, opinionated woman with a sly wit, who loves her family deeply. Meanwhile, Chin Han is playing Jin’s father, Simon Wang, a hard-working, devoted father and husband.

Wu will be playing Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, a legendary, all-powerful god of the Chinese epic Journey to the West, who enters our world in search of his son. Ke Huy Quan is taking on the role of Freddy Wong, a fictional character from a popular mid-1990s sitcom.

Jim Liu will be Wei-Chen, Jin’s friend and a teen who has just arrived in the United States. He has a sweet demeanour but hides a deeper mystery of his true identity. Wrapping up the cast is Sydney Taylor as Amelia, a friendly American girl who is Jin’s classmate and crush.

The series will be produced by 20th Television and is set to begin production later this month in Los Angeles. Emmy Award-winning writer and producer, Kelvin Yu will serve as executive producer and showrunner. Meanwhile, Destin Daniel Cretton of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set to direct and serve as executive producer alongside Melvin Mar and Jake Kasdan, Erin O’Malley and Gene Luen Yang.
