With their 2026 album on the horizon, revisit the evolution of BTS from humble beginnings to global icons, one studio album at a time

On July 1, without notice or fanfare, global music superstars BTS went live on Weverse. All seven members, RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, came together for their first group broadcast since September 2022. The surprise reunion drew 7.3 million real-time viewers and came with major news: a new album is set for spring 2026, along with a massive world tour.

This marks the unwinding of the group’s “Chapter 2” era, during which members fulfilled military service while releasing critically acclaimed solo projects. From RM's introspective Indigo to Jungkook’s chart-topping Golden, each member showcased their individual artistry, but fans never forgot the magic that happens when all seven unite.

The group’s extensive discography spans numerous mini-albums that established K-pop’s global blueprint, alongside record-breaking Japanese sets like Face Yourself and Map of the Soul: The Journey. However, it’s their five Korean studio albums that built their empire, each marking a milestone in their journey from underdogs to K-pop titans. As they prepare for their 2026 return, revisit the BTS albums that lit up the global music scene.

‘Dark & Wild’ (2014)

Above ‘Dark & Wild’ (2014) spent 11 weeks on Billboard's World Albums chart.

Lead single: “Danger”

The unapologetically hip-hop album was BTS’s first full-length statement to the world. Fusing different genres of hip-hop (South, West, Boom Bap and Trap) with a rock edge, it perfectly captured their “bulletproof boy scouts” identity. With its piercing punk-rock guitar riff and ferocious energy, lead single “Danger” became their calling card, while the album spent 11 weeks on Billboard’s World Albums chart and won a prestigious Bonsang at the Golden Disc Awards.

‘Wings’ (2016)

Tatler Asia
Above ‘Wings’ (2016) explored heartbreak through hip-hop, synth-pop and Latin-inspired sounds.

Lead single: “Fake Love”

This was the moment BTS transformed from rising stars to global superstars. The emotionally complex album explored heartbreak through hip-hop, synth-pop and Latin-inspired sounds. “Fake Love” debuted at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the album made history as the first K-pop release to top the Billboard 200. Wings earned a Grammy nomination for Best Recording Package, their first Academy recognition. With Album of the Year Daesang sweeps, it also cemented their status as serious artistic contenders worldwide.

‘Map of the Soul: 7’ (2020)

Tatler Asia
Above ‘Map of the Soul: 7’ (2020) debuted at number one on charts in the world's five largest music markets.

Lead single: “ON”

BTS’s most ambitious project was a 20-track set exploring Jungian psychology while celebrating their seven-year journey. “ON”, which featured marching band percussion and a gospel choir, debuted at number four on the Billboard Hot 100. The album obliterated records, debuting at number one on charts in the world’s five largest music markets, a first for any Asian group. It became South Korea’s best-selling album at that time, with over five million copies sold, and earned the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry’s (IFPI) Global Album of the Year title for 2020.

‘BE’ (2020)

Tatler Asia
Above ‘BE’ (2020) earned the group’s fifth Billboard 200 number one.

Lead single: “Life Goes On”

Created during the pandemic, BE showcased BTS at their most personal and hands-on, with the members contributing to every aspect of the set, from production to visual direction. The hope-filled “Life Goes On” made history as the first Korean-language song to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The eight-track collection also earned the group’s fifth Billboard 200 number one, while comforting millions during unprecedented times.

BTS’s new album (expected in 2026)

The upcoming album comes at the perfect moment for what could be their biggest release yet. Starting this month, all seven members will collaborate closely on new music, travelling to the US for production. Their first world tour in nearly four years will follow, marking their return since the Permission to Dance on Stage shows that drew over four million attendees. The members revealed this will be a group album reflecting their individual thoughts and ideas, promising the collaborative chemistry fans adore.

After the longest group hiatus of their career, pent-up demand for BTS is unprecedented. Each member returns enriched by solo journeys, bringing a fresh perspective to the group. And if their past trajectory is any indication, this long-awaited album will not only meet but surpass all expectations.
