Some love triangles are painful, some are thrilling and some just leave us permanently scarred with second-lead syndrome
Love triangles are the bread and butter of K-dramas. There’s nothing quite like watching two characters vie for the heart of a swoon-worthy protagonist, making us scream at our screens in frustration, joy or sheer second-lead syndrome agony. Some love triangles give us obvious endgames, while others keep us guessing until the very last episode. Love triangles give us something to root for, and we hang on until the very end to see if the lead made the right choice.
Here are 10 of the most endearing (and also heart-wrenching) K-drama love triangles—plus who ultimately won the leading character’s heart.

This love triangle is the K-drama equivalent of a slow burn, leaving fans in agony for 20 episodes. Sung Deok-sun (Hyeri) grows up surrounded by her childhood friends, including the reliable yet emotionally awkward Jung-hwan (Ryu Jun-yeol) and the quiet, genius baduk player Choi Taek (Park Bo-gum).
For much of the series, Jung-hwan seems like the obvious choice—he pines for Deok-sun, buys her little gifts and nearly confesses multiple times. But nearly is the keyword. In the end, it’s Taek’s quiet determination and unwavering love that win Deok-sun over. Sometimes, it’s not about being slow. It’s about taking action.
Winner: Choi Taek
2. ‘Boys Over Flowers’ – Jan-di, Jun-pyo and Ji-hoo

While Ji-hoo is Jan-di’s knight in shining armour—always there to comfort her and sweep her away—Jun-pyo undergoes the most growth. From an arrogant chaebol heir to a man willing to risk it all for love, he proves his devotion time and again. The emotional rollercoaster ends with Jan-di choosing Jun-pyo, despite second-lead syndrome being stronger than ever.

Sun-oh and Jojo have an electric, passionate romance, but the app—and some major miscommunication—pull them apart.
