These green-flag bearers are raising the standards for romance

In a world full of red flags, K-dramas offer a forest of green flags—male characters who are devoted, supportive and emotionally mature. From Gwang-sik, whose love for his wife defines his very existence, to Ri Jeong-hyeok, the North Korean soldier willing to risk everything for love, and Ryu Sun-jae, whose affection for Im Sol transcends time—these men exemplify what it means to be a true romantic partner.

Their love is steadfast, respectful and selfless, proving that the most extraordinary romantic gestures often come from everyday devotion. Whether they cross borders, defy time or simply remain unwavering in their affections, these green-flag heroes set the gold standard for love.

Gwang-sik from ‘When Life Gives You Tangerines’

If there were an award for Best Husband of All Time, Yang Gwang-sik (Park Bo-gum) would undoubtedly take it home. Unwavering in his devotion, he lives for Oh Ae-sun (IU). If she wanted to grow up to be president one day, he would happily be her first husband. When she cried as the ship he was on sailed away, he jumped in the water and swam back to her. When he discovered his family mistreating her, he stood up for her.

He is a steadfast presence, holding her hand through life’s ups and downs. But even more than just a shoulder to lean on, he is someone who champions Ae-sun’s ambitions and celebrates her for who she is.

Ri Jeong-hyeok from ‘Crash Landing on You’

After Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin) accidentally paraglides across the border to North Korea, she encounters Ri Jeong-hyeok (Hyun Bin), a North Korean officer.

Determined to keep her safe, he hides her while he comes up with a plan to sneak her safely back into South Korea. In the meantime, despite himself, he dotes on her—cooking her handmade noodles, grilling beef and clams and securing contraband luxuries like body wash and scented candles. He even defies his powerful general father for her and—in the ultimate act of love and devotion—crosses the DMZ to save her.

Ryu Sun-jae from ‘Lovely Runner’

Ryu Sun-jae (Byeon Woo-seok) is one of the biggest idols in South Korea and could probably get any girl he wants, but he only has eyes for Im Sol (Kim Hye-yoon). Meanwhile Im Sol, the ultimate Sun-jae fan, has no idea that he has been harbouring secret feelings for her since high school.

It’s not until she travels back in time to save him from a tragic fate that she discovers the depth of his devotion. Sun-jae is someone who would run after a bus because she missed her stop. He is also someone who, upon learning that he will die in the future, worries about what Im Sol’s family thinks of him instead of his fate. Most importantly, he is someone who loves her in all her eras and in every timeline.

Lee Jun-ho from ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo’

Gentle, respectful and infinitely patient, Lee Jun-ho (Kang Tae-oh) is the perfect romantic prospect for Woo Young-woo (Park Eun-bin), an extraordinary attorney with autism spectrum disorder. He helps her adjust after she lands a job at a law firm, lending support and expressing appreciation for the unconventional way she gets things done.

When others misunderstand her, he stands by her. When they ridicule her for her intense fascination with whales, he sweetly indulges it. As their friendship blossoms into romance, he treats her with understanding and tenderness. And their first kiss, sweet and chaste, will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most wholesome kisses in K-drama history.

Han Ji-pyeong from ‘Start-Up’

At first glance, Han Ji-pyeong (Kim Seon-ho) may seem distant and aloof, but he quickly won over the hearts of fans with his quiet acts of service. His most touching relationship isn’t even a romantic one—it’s the deep bond he shares with Choi Won-deok (Kim Hae-sook), whose kindness changed his life.

As the classic second lead, he was never destined to win the girl. Yet, he never held it against Dal-mi, continuing to mentor her and support her dreams. When he confessed his feelings, he did so with maturity and selflessness, earning the well-deserved nickname, “Good Boy”.

Yang Do-hyeok from ‘Nevertheless’

Lovingly nicknamed “Potato Boy” by fans as a reference to the scene where he reconnects with Yu Na-bi (Han So-hee), Yang Do-hyeok (Chae Jong-Hyeop) is the green flag to Park Jae-Eon’s (Song Kang) red flag.

Unlike Jae-on, who is fickle and whose intentions toward Na-bi are dubious at best, Do-hyeok is consistent and reliable. Much like Start-Up’s Han Ji-pyeong, he openly expresses his feelings to Na-bi but never pressures her to feel the same. And when she begins to doubt herself, it’s his unwavering support and belief in her talent that give her the confidence to keep chasing her dreams.

Jung Yi-hyun from ‘Happiness’

Jung Yi-Hyun’s (Park Hyung-sik) has secretly been in love with Yoon Sae-Bom (Han Hyo-joo) for years but, aware that she doesn’t feel the same way, has respectfully kept his distance and happily settled for friendship instead.  When she asks him if he would be willing to marry her for the express purpose of securing an apartment, he barely bats an eye when he says yes.

When a zombie outbreak sweeps through their apartment complex, he time and again proves his unwavering devotion, offering her comfort and protection. However, as much as he is always ready to fend off zombies—and annoying neighbours—for her, he always treats her as an equal, never failing to recognise her strength and appreciate her instincts.

Hwang Yong-sik from ‘When the Camellia Blooms’

When Dong-baek (Gong Hyo-jin), a single mother raising a young son, moves into a new town and opens up a bar-restaurant, her situation sets tongues wagging. Her new neighbours find plenty to criticise. Thankfully, she finds an ally in Hwang Yong-Sik (Kang Ha-Neul), the local police officer.

Having fallen for Dong-baek at first sight, Yong-sik doesn’t hesitate to take her side. Unlike the rest of the townsfolk, he doesn’t judge her for her circumstances and embraces her for who she is. His affections for her are genuine and his intentions are noble, and although he may act like a fool in love most of the time, he proves to be a reliable knight in shining armour, too.

Choi Taek from ‘Reply 1988’

Choi Taek’s (Park Bo-gum) love for Deok-sun (Lee Hye-ri) is quiet but consistent. He doesn’t show it through grand gestures, but through loving acts of service that easily go unnoticed. He proves that love indeed is patient and kind, never rushing Deok-sun. Instead, he stays by her side and offers genuine care and tenderness, without expecting anything in return. His unwavering presence proves that sometimes, love isn’t about words or dramatic actions—it’s about the quiet, consistent gestures that stand the test of time.

Yu Eun-Ho from ‘Love Scout’

When Yu Eun-ho (Lee Jun-hyuk) is hired as Kang Ji-yun’s (Han Ji-min) secretary, their dynamic seems destined for conflict. Uptight and exacting, Ji-yun is hard to please. But Eun-ho proves up to the task, providing the kind of unwavering support and assistance Ji-yun didn’t even know she needed.

Eun-ho is the gentle presence that grounds Ji-yun. He recognises her strengths and flaws and accepts her for all that she is without judgment. His quiet strength makes her feel protected and gives her the confidence to face challenges head-on.

Cho Yong-pil from ‘Welcome to Samdal-ri’

Time and distance are nothing when it comes to Cho Yong-pil’s (Ji Chang-Wook) love for Cho Sam-dal (Shin Hae-sun). Years after their painful breakup, his love has remained steadfast, much to the frustration of his father and their childhood friends.

Despite being unaware of why she decided to end their relationship years ago, he doesn’t hold it against her. So when she reluctantly returns home after a career-ending scandal, he welcomes her back with open arms. It’s clear he wants to understand why she left him and to rekindle their relationship, but it’s to his credit that his first priority is to help her find her way back to herself and find her courage again.
