Penned by Drew Gasparini, ‘We Aren’t Kids Anymore’ makes its Philippine premiere as Barefoot Theatre Collaborative stages it this May 2025

Barefoot Theatre Collaborative kicks off 2025 by bringing a promising new work from London to the Philippine live theatre stage. Following its critically acclaimed productions such as Mula sa BuwanPride PlaysThe Last Five Years, and Bar Boys: A New Musical, the company adds a distinct Filipino flavour to Drew Gasparini’s uplifting coming-of-age musical, We Aren’t Kids Anymore.

Diving into the messy reality of growing up, We Aren’t Kids Anymore digs deeper in understanding adolescence and adulthood, inviting audiences to reflect on that point in life where you see that who you thought you’d be is different from who you’re actually becoming. We Aren’t Kids Anymore is about to premiere at the Savoy Theatre in April 2025 after its successful workshop in June 2024.

Ready to take Filipino audiences find epiphany in the dreams they swore they would chase but were eventually hit by the realities of life as the world stopped being as simple as it used to be, cast members Gab Pangilinan, Maronne Cruz, Gio Gahol, Luigi Quesada, and Myke Salomon are taking over the characters written by Gasparini, navigating the changes that come with the realisation life doesn’t come with a manual. Katrine Sunga and Angelo Lantaco serve as covers for the actors.

Promising to be a hard-hitting show for all audiences who once or still feel lost, stuck, or unsure of the way forward, We Aren’t Kids Anymore features gut-punching songs crafted by  Gasparini with Justin Goldner, as well as a poem by Keith White.

Helming the production is Rem Zamora as its director, joined by Salomon and Farley Asuncion as musical directors, Jomelle Era as movement director, Joey Mendoza as production designer, Hershee Tantiado as associate production designer, D Cortezano as lighting designer and technical director, and Aron Roca as sound designer.

We Aren’t Kids Anymore is a modern story highlighting five people navigating adulthood’s emotional and artistic complexities. It is a captivating story inspired by Gasparini’s personal life journey. When its concept album was released last year, it immediately gained much attention, just like many of his other songs found in Smash and The Karate Kid, among others. For this piece, Gasparini offers a radical approach to traditional music theatre, showcasing self-discovery and growth through musical storytelling.

We Aren’t Kids Anymore will be staged for four weeks only from May 2 to 25, at the Power Mac Center Spotlight Blackbox Theater in Circuit Makati. The show will run for 90 minutes without intermission and there will be no admission for latecomers. This production is licensed by Concord Theatricals.
