Sining Filipina is calling for submissions from female artists all over the Philippines

The Zonta Club of Makati and Environs presents its second iteration of Sining Filipina, the country’s sole female-only nationwide art competition. With the theme of “Her Earth, Her Future”, this endeavour encourages artists to showcase their portrayals of women paving the way in sustainability. Filipina women of all backgrounds and across all regions are eligible to participate, encouraged with a platform to share their art.

Sining Filipina is the first of its kind—a surprise, considering the number of talented Filipina artists in the country. “Filipina women have so much power, have so much vision, and have so much to say, but they did not have a platform in which to express their human experiences,” comments Joanne Zapanta-Andrada, president of the Zonta Club of Makati and Environs, at a press event.

Last year, the competition garnered 730 submissions and came down to 10 finalists. Hanna Joy Sayam of Negros Occidental was awarded the grand prize for her artwork titled Pira-pirasong Tela ng mga Marias, while Maria Gemma San Jose from Ilocos Norte won top honours for her piece, Layers of Experience.

For this year’s Sining Filipina, all artworks from 50 chosen finalists will be showcased at an exhibit held at SM Aura in late March. Women of all ages may opt to submit their original paintings in oil, acrylic, or mixed media. “It’s a great venue to promote art,” says Grace Magno, SM Supermalls vice president for corporate marketing. “[About five million people] pass through our doors everyday. Many of them are artists.”
