Lilianna Manahan brings her favourite music to life with Snapshoot

What is the worth of our emotions? Are these just fleeting sentiments that we allow passing? For Lilianna Manahan, they mean so much more. Manahan's colourful artwork makes moments stand out, from childhood memories and video games to Korean pop icons.

Memorable memories don’t have to be long ones. Sometimes it’s the short, split-second ones that make an impact.

Know more about Manahan and how she explains emotions like kilig (giddiness) through her playful solo exhibit, Snapshoot!

Snapshoot serves as a trip down memory lane for Manahan. The medium of the paper itself has her going back to her roots. Her past work has always focused on sculptures, but this exhibit highlights something beyond that. Paper is generally seen as an "arts and crafts" object, but she breaks that notion and creates something that holds her memories and emotions. That is art for Manahan. For what is art but a way to speak the artist’s mind?

We tend to forget little things in our lives. Manahan wants to change that cognition and put meaning into even the most minute moments. If you remember something that made you smile, keep that memory. If there’s that one song that makes you feel good, listen to it again. If that cone of sorbetes (dirty ice cream) reminds you of the simplicity of childhood, have it again. For Manahan, it’s the way her niece screams whenever they attend a K-pop concert. Or when she stays up to play Street Fighter. She wants you to cherish these memories and never undervalue what matters most. It’s not always the big events that deserve to be remembered. Even the plainest echoes of the past shape us into who we are.

The exhibit also touches on Manahan’s love for music. She mentions that it started with opera because of the lockdowns, then jazz with no lyrics, K-pop and Korean rap because the upbeat and feel-good rhythm speaks to her. Though the words are difficult to comprehend, the songs' varying vibes express their messages effectively, enough for her to understand and experience emotions.

The space itself during the exhibit's opening was set in a way that speaks whimsically. Bowls of silly headbands, shades, and chocolates took centre stage while a sorbetero welcomed guests at the entrance.

Snapshoot is held at the León Gallery from February 22 to March 6.
