The annual gala dinner celebrates Singapore Symphony Orchestra’s 45th anniversary with a programme specially curated by music director maestro Hans Graf
Food and music have many things in common—on top of nourishing our body and soul, both food and music also bring people together.
This is something Singapore Symphony Orchestra’s (SSO) music director maestro Hans Graf also hopes to achieve from this year’s gala dinner. “[The symphony ball] is a nice, noble and elegant way to build a symphony family together,” he shares.
The SSO Symphony Ball is an annual gala dinner that features a luxurious dining experience alongside live performances by the orchestra. Themed Joie de Vivre, the 2024 ball will be held at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore and will be led by the chair of the Symphony Ball committee Paige Parker.

This year’s programme is specially curated by Graf himself, who will also be conducting the ball for the first time. Born into a music-loving family, the Austrian conductor’s interest in music began during his childhood, and he found his passion for conducting soon after.
Today, Graf has years of experience under his belt. Formerly music director of the Houston Symphony, Graf has frequently appeared with all major orchestras in North America and Europe, including New York, London Symphony and Vienna Philharmonic. On conducting his first SSO Symphony Ball, he shares: “I’m very nervous but very curious”.
Throughout the evening, guests can look forward to spectacular performances by the national orchestra. While the official programme line-up is kept a secret for now, Graf hints at a particular piece he looks forward to playing: Bizet’s Petit Mari, Petit Femme. Translated to mean ‘little husband, little wife’, Graf explains how this is a “sweet” piece and “not at all childish in the music”, making it understandable for all ages. “I can’t give everything away,” he teases, adding that the orchestra will be playing “about half of a regular concert length in music” and will feature entertaining and short pieces.

Complementing the music is a mouthwatering selection of French dishes and wines. Graf shares how his love for food and wine is like his love for music. “Food and wine has a lot to do with art. Good food is an art—and it’s the same for wine,” he continues, adding how they hope to create a “wonderful menu” for the evening. On top of melodious harmonies and delectable dishes, the evening will also see an auction segment featuring a curation of exclusive wines and whiskey.
With an exciting lineup of performances, dishes and drinks, the memorable evening is sure to be filled with joie de vivre.
