Here’s what we know so far about Newport World Resorts’ latest production: ‘Shrek the Musical’
During the closing show of Delia D: A Musical Featuring the Songs of Jonathan Manalo, Newport World Resorts announced its next two productions, Shrek the Musical—hitting the stage this October—and Bagets: The Musical in 2026. As the cast took their final bows and began dancing to celebrate the musical’s finale, Almond Bolante emerged sporting a headband resembling Shrek’s ears with a showstopping performance of Smash Mouth’s hit song, I’m A Believer.

Based on the 2001 DreamWorks film and the 1990 book by William Steig, Shrek the Musical originally premiered at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle for a trial run in 2008 and quickly made its way to Broadway later that year—earning a Tony Award for Best Costume Design and three Drama Desk Awards in 2009.
In 2014, the musical was staged under Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment featuring theatre veterans Shiela Valderrama-Martinez, Nyoy Volante and Carla Guevara-Laforteza among others.

Reinforcing its commitment to positioning the Philippines as Asia’s Broadway, Newport World Resorts promises a refreshing take on a beloved source material to be directed by Michael Williams—who previously did GMG Productions’ Come From Away and Buruguduystunstugudunstuy among others—with Dexter Santos on musical staging and choreography and Rony Fortich helming musical direction.
As of writing, Shrek the Musical has yet to announce its cast and auditions for young and teen Fiona are being held until July 20. Auditions for all adult roles happened earlier this March, so stay tuned for updates!
Shrek the Musical opens on October 31, 2025, at the Newport Performing Arts Theatre. Tickets are now available. For more information, visit their social media pages.
