This 2023, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD) at De La Salle St Benilde will be hosting free movie screenings every Wednesday at noon. All feature films are set in residences and explore the meaning of "home" to their protagonists. The schedule for these screenings is as follows:
January 4: Home Alone (1990)
A cult classic and a favourite holiday film for many, Home Alone introduces viewers to young, mischievous Kevin McCallister. After his family forgets to take him along on vacation, Kevin finds himself alone in an empty house and rejoices, assuming his wish to not have a family has come true. But when two con men come to rob the McCallister residence, Kevin realises that he alone can protect the family home.
January 11: The Apartment (1960)
Funny and chock-full of old-world charm, the 1960 Billy Wilder film, The Apartment, centres on many romances. Meet C.C. "Bud" Baxter, an ambitious Manhattan insurance clerk who attempts to curry favour with his superiors by loaning his apartment key to them for the purpose of their extramarital affairs. But what happens when Bud ends up falling for the girlfriend of one of his company's top executives? Simultaneously funny yet poignant, it's a film that comes highly rated and must not be missed.
January 18: In the Mood for Love (2000)
Romantic to say the least, In the Mood for Love is among War Kang Wai's most well-known films. Set in the early 60s, journalist Chow Mo-wan and his wife move into a Hong Kong apartment. It is here that Chow makes the acquaintance of the beautiful Su Li-zhen. Though both realise that there is a mutual attraction, Chow and Su refuse to be unfaithful to their partners—even though both soon realise that they are also being cheated on.
January 25: Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1976)
Who hasn't experienced the humdrum of everyday life? Jeanne Dielman, the movie's titular character, is the widowed mother of a teenage son. Her days are routinary and involve a myriad of repetitive tasks—shopping, cooking, and housework. Everything seems perfectly fine until a series of slight interruptions lead to some dramatic changes. Lauded by the British Film Institute as a masterpiece in 2022, this nostalgic film from the 70s is definitely worth a watch.
