At Art Basel Hong Kong, Tatler hosts an exclusive conversation with artist Marilyn Minter to discuss her artworks at the fair and her new exhibition in Seoul

To celebrate the opening of Art Basel Hong Kong 2024, Tater hosted a candid conversation with renowned artist Marilyn Minter. Moderated by our arts and culture editor Aaina Bhargava, the discussion revolved around the photographer’s newly opened exhibition in Seoul and her works at the ongoing Art Basel, including the buzzy installation, Thirsty (2023), which is on view at Lehmann Maupin’s booth in the fair’s Kabinett section.

Earlier this year, Minter had shot an exclusive self-portrait for Tatler and was featured in our March issue. Known for upending expectations around conventional beauty standards and instilling the female gaze through paintings and photographs, Minter spoke at length about the inspiration behind her prolific body of work, noting the significance of observation. “The eye craves what it cannot see,” the artist says, alluding to the common yet less visible aspects of the human body, such as freckles and wrinkles. “Chasing perfection is biggest problem we are [currently] suffering from. Guilt is an emotion you can repent and learn from, but there is no cure to [feeling] shame.”

She also spoke about navigating the art world and finding success later in life. “The art world loves old ladies and dead ladies and it loves young bad boys,” Minter says. “That’s why I make it a point to support younger female artists, I hope they find success earlier in their career and are famous throughout their lives.”

The fireside chat took place at Exchange Circle, an on-site venue at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre before the official opening of the fair and was attended by more than 30 guests, including Ruth Chao, Amanda Strang, Lindsey McAllister, Calvin Wang, Claudia Cheng and Denise Lo.
