One of the Four Heavenly Kings of Hong Kong and Asian fashion doyenne collaborate on Lovfinity to bring you best of both worlds

Expect nothing subtle when Leon Lai, king of Canto-pop, and Vivienne Tam, queen of fashion, grace the Central Harbourfront stage on December 17 and 18. The event space will be transformed into the city’s largest outdoor catwalk stage for Lai and Tam’s Lovfinity, which weaves together a fashion show and drive-in a concert, allowing audiences to enjoy the event while seated in the comfort of their cars parked at designated spots.

Putting equal emphasis on both, without one overshadowing the other, the event promises to be a multifaceted treat for the senses with its eclectic mix of colours and Canto-pop.

Lovfinity will showcase pieces from Tam’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection that were displayed at the New York Fashion Week, as well as bespoke outfits created exclusively for this Hong Kong event. Meanwhile, Lai’s setlist will be a surprise.

“I can’t spill too much [details], but it is a show bringing the best of both worlds. It will be a fascinating night for both fashionistas and music lovers,” says Tam.

While this is the first time that the two are collaborating, their connection goes back a long way—to 1996, when the singer attended Tam’s fashion show in New York while on a trip to film the music video for his song, Words of Love Not Yet Spoken.

Tam described Lai as “an advocator of unprecedented creativity” and recalls his experimentations with EDM (electronic dance music) and VR gaming music videos before either gained popularity in Hong Kong.

The fashion designer believes she shares a similar creativity in her work. “I am attracted to new technologies. For every collection, I think of incorporating new ideas into my design, even when everyone else says it’s impossible,” she says.

In the past, Tam has incorporated elements of technology, film and visual art in her runway shows. And for her latest project she has collaborated with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) to create a piece of animated art, which she claims “features NFTs within an NFT.”

“I have put a Web3 spin on my signature qipao design to explore and inspire possibilities in the metaverse,” she explains. “Using the form of a traditional Chinese garment, I have redesigned my heritage for the metaverse and brought together the past, present and future in one design.”

Continuing this journey into cyberspace, Tam has also worked with NFT artists and owners to transform their digital art into physical dresses, that are part of the SS23 collection to be showcased at Lovfinity.

“I love crossovers and collaborating with great minds from different disciplines,” she says. “I’ve learnt so much and broken creative boundaries every time I work with these innovative partners. So when the organiser of Leon’s concert approached me with this exciting idea, I could hardly say no.”

Tam believes that Lovfinity will change fashion shows and concerts in the future. She also hopes to channel resilience and convey the message of love with their collaboration.

Lovfinity means ‘love and the power of infinity’,” she says. “I want to bring love, hope and creative energy to the audience and to Hong Kong. It’s time to rebound from the pandemic and celebrate life.”
