Ushering in the return of live musicals, Trumpets Theatre presents 'Joseph the Dreamer', at the Maybank Performing Arts Theatre this July 22 to August 7

There's plenty to be excited about in the world of theatre. After having to shut down production during the onset of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Trumpets Theatre returns with one of its most popular musicals, Joseph the Dreamer.

Based on the Biblical story of Joseph, the 11th son of Jacob, Joseph the Dreamer is a musical written by Freddie Santos back in the '80s. Marketing head for Joseph the Dreamer Miguel Jimenez shares: "Joseph the Dreamer is a show that speaks to the family with messages of love and forgiveness. It is a show about enduring struggles with messages of perseverance, having grit, and overcoming obstacles no matter how long it takes. It is a show about having faith in God. You may not see it yet, it might take a two-year lockdown—in Joseph's case it might take a 7-year famine—but in the end, you know God's got your back."

The 2022 restaging will run for two weeks, from July 22 to August 7, at the Maybank Performing Arts Theatre in Bonifacio Global City. Having previously gained the praise of its audience, Joseph the Dreamer is one of the company's most well-known and familiar musicals. This rendition will star Sam Concepcion reprising the titular role of Joseph after portraying it in 2020. He will be alongside Gary Valenciano and Audie Gemora, who will be alternating the role of Jacob, Joseph's father. "I'm coming into this run with new energy, and it's more of a celebration knowing that God saw us through those last two years," says Concepcion.

Joseph the Dreamer is, in fact, Trumpets' longest-running musical. It first premiered in 1989, starring Gemora as Joseph. In 1999, Valenciano became his alternate. In this way, the 2022 restaging of the musical shares plenty of theatrical history between the cast. And that's not the only connection formed backstage of Joseph the Dreamer. Its director, Paolo Valenciano, son of Gary, will play Jacob. "I know what his strengths are, I know what makes him uncomfortable, so it's easy for me to work with him," Paolo explains.

Kayla Rivera will portray the role of Asenath, Carlo Orosa as Pharoah, and Bituin Escalante as Rachel, Joseph's mother. The production is co-directed by Paolo Valenciano and Nelsito Gomez, with musical direction by Myke Salomon, choreography by MJ Arda, and production design by Mio Infante.
