As Cubao’s latest addition to its thriving art scene, Improv Art Gallery showcases 42 artists in its inaugural exhibition
When you think of Cubao’s art scene, Cubao Expo’s iconic aesthetic and vibrant community or Art in Island’s immersive and standout installations immediately come to mind. Bridging these two extremes is a new gallery nestled in the corner of New York Street and EDSA, right next to the Katinko building. Improv Art Gallery—stylised Impr°v—is the latest space dedicated to artistic growth and experimentation. True to its name, the showroom features pieces that tell each artist’s personal truth.

Upon entering the space, one can immediately detect a rustic vibe that adds to the gallery’s charm. The area is spacious enough not to feel suffocated as you peruse every painting on display while having an intimate and homey atmosphere. A glass room is situated adjacent to the main floor, allowing visitors a secondary place to lounge. Venture deeper into the hallway, and you’ll find an expansive chamber meant for the bigger pieces.
Inaugurating the gallery is Evolving Narratives, which showcases the works of 42 artists across mediums such as photographer bimpoman, multidisciplinary artist Melissa Yeung-Yap, and fashion designer Edgar San Diego, among many others. Curated by Barbara San Diego, the exhibition is themed under the idea that creation is not static, always in motion, and unafraid of risk—mirroring Improv’s ethos. ‘‘Our inaugural exhibition, Evolving Narratives, reflects the heart of our vision for the gallery. I was drawn to the idea of showcasing the journeys of 42 artists as they explore themes of growth, transformation, and how they perceive the world around them... The exhibition features distinct sections: one focused on photography and printmaking, another highlighting Filipiniana, surrealist, and portrait works. We welcome all mediums—as a curator, what matters most to me is that the artists feel free to express their authentic voices,’’ shares San Diego.

Fueled by a calling to create a space for introspection and collective dialogue, Improv Art Gallery features artists from all stages—whether they’re emerging, in the middle of their careers, or making a comeback into the scene. “This exhibition doesn’t aim to define a fixed vision—it opens a space for uncertainty, reflection and becoming. In doing so, it sets the tone for what Improv Art Gallery aspires to be: a home for transformation, dialogue, and artistic courage,” says San Diego in a curatorial statement.

As for what the future holds, Improv Art Gallery plans to host more exhibitions and collaborations as well as workshops. As an artist-centred third space, it welcomes anyone open to the idea of experimentation, artistic fluidity, and evolution. ‘‘We plan to mount shows every month. The curation of Evolving Narratives offers a glimpse into what we hope to develop throughout the year... While workshops are definitely on the horizon, our focus for this year is on producing exhibitions that shape and grow our community,’’ she says.
Evolving Narratives is on display at Improv Art Gallery until June 4, 2025, Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10am to 6pm. For more information, visit their social media pages.
