On September 23, the city’s most beautiful people gathered to show support for art-focused charity First Initiative Foundation’s (FIF) annual fundraising ball. Held at Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong, the gala’s theme, Paper Poems: An Ode to Hong Kong Heritage, transported attendees to a world of nostalgia, artistic performances and heartfelt giving.

As guests arrived at the ballroom, they were greeted by a breathtaking physical and digital art installation by renowned visual effects director Victor Wong, along with an art collaboration by master paper-cutting artist, Li Yun-Xia, and renowned paper-art makers, StickyLine. Decorations including paper lanterns adorned the venue and the ambiance exuded a sense of pride and reverence for Hong Kong’s heritage.

For dinner, master chefs from Hanare, Hansik Goo, Whey, SẾP and the hotel’s own executive pastry chef prepared dishes from their own heritage. Adding a delightful twist to the evening, the signature drink of the night was none other than the beloved Hong Kong milk tea with tapioca pearls. Attendees dressed in their finest tuxedos and couture, relished the opportunity to sip on these sweet and refreshing concoctions, creating a playful and nostalgic vibe reminiscent of Hong Kong’s bustling streets.

Afterwards, Michelle Ong, FIF’s chairwoman, took to the stage. “This year’s gala event celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Hong Kong through the art of paper-cutting craftsmanship. We hope to raise awareness and support for this beautiful piece of Hong Kong’s legacy and help preserve it for future generations,” she said.

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the extraordinary performance by the Cha Duk Chang Children’s Cantonese Opera Association and a dazzling set by artists Karen Mok and Hins Cheung. Their voices captivated the crowd, which included Tony and Paulene Cruz, Arthur de Villepin and Crisel Consunji.

In a heartwarming moment, video messages poured in from FIF artists in support, including the esteemed author Kevin Kwan and pianist Lang Lang, who expressed their gratitude for the unwavering support and dedication to the foundation’s mission. Their messages not only demonstrated the impact of the foundation’s work but also served as a reminder of the importance of collective efforts in making a positive change in society.

The evening was not only a celebration of Hong Kong’s vibrant heritage but also a testament to the philanthropic spirit of the attendees. Generous contributions made during the silent auction will play a pivotal role in furthering the initiatives of the FIF, supporting their ongoing efforts to promote cultural preservation, education, and community development.

The FIF gala dinner once again proved to be a remarkable platform, bringing together like-minded individuals to make a lasting impact on the community.
