The Male Ensemble Philippines secures first and second prizes at the 54th Tolosa Choral Contest
This six-member vocal ensemble under the Philippine Madrigal Singers Company of Artists made our country proud. They have won multiple prizes at the recently concluded 54th Tolosa Choral Contest held from October 31 to November 5 in the Basque region of Spain.
The contest is regarded as one of the most important choral events in the world, bringing together top choirs from every part of the globe to exchange styles, interpretations, choral literature, vocal education, and customs, and raise awareness of the musical and cultural tradition of the Basque countryside.

Led by the renowned musical director, composer, and educator Ily Matthew Maniano, the Male Ensemble Philipines (MEn) won the first prize in the secular music category, performing Eudenice Palaruan’s Tangguyog, William Byrd’s Haec Dies, Pavel Chesnokov’s Spasenie Sodelal, Kevin Memley’s Locus Iste, and Ily Matthew Maniano’s Hodie.
The group went on to win the second prize in the Sacred Music Category after performing Or Si rallegri il Cielo by Giaches de Wert, Die Nacht by Franz Schubert, Tigmamanukan by Ily Matthew Maniano, Yakap ng Awit by Jem Talaroc, Down by the Riverside by Traditional Spiritual, arranged by Robert Rice, and Maitia, Nun Zira?, a Basque Folk Song arranged by Maniano.

The company consisted of two countertenors, Maniano and Amiel Job Liwanagan, two tenors, Tomas Umberto Virtucio, Jr and John Philip Bautista, one baritone, Dwight Benedict Chavez, and one bass, Emerson Flores.
“The Cultural Center of the Philippines is proud of the Male Ensemble Philippines' success in the Tolosa Choral Contest. We laud them for epitomising solid musicianship and championing artistic discipline and respect. Our Filipino artists have been making their mark on both local and international stages, and the CCP supports them in their artistic journey," said CCP president Michelle Nikki Junia.
The Male Ensemble Philippines is on its 2023 European Concert Tour, conducting performances and workshops in France, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Austria until December 19.
