From the vibrant charm of the Sunny Side Up market to the laid-back neighbourly vibes of Kabut in the Park, you never know what you’ll find in the Klang Valley’s most eclectic community markets.
Seek & Keep BSC Artisan Market
A haven for shoppers in Bangsar, the Seek & Keep Artisan Market at Bangsar Shopping Centre (BSC) is a regular event at the Main Concourse area on the mall's ground floor. Presented by Makers & Co (the same organisers behind the beloved ‘Tukar Tangan Pre-loved Market’), Seek & Keep is a joyful affair, boasting rows of colourful booths selling handcrafted goodies by homegrown businesses, from delicious baked goods and bespoke fashion to skincare, jewellery, and more.
Take note: There are also live performances and creative workshops for kids, so be sure to grab the family and visit this weekend market, happening this August 22 - 25.
Pasar Seloka
The Pasar Seloka lifestyle pop-up is a beloved community market established in 2012. This month, its Merdeka edition is taking place at popular events space The Grounds by Brick House Group at Kuala Lumpur’s Mahsa Avenue. If you enjoyed Pasar Seloka’s recent Weekend Picnic at the PJ Trade Centre’s Menara Mustapha Kamal, you wouldn’t want to miss this Jiwa Merdeka edition.
With over 60 booths selling delicious eats and locally curated items, Pasar Seloka is the place to support local brands within a sing-song atmosphere of music and family-friendly fun.
Take note: The Pasar Seloka Kita Merdeka market will take place this August 24 - 25 from 10am to 8pm at the Grounds, Mahsa Avenue.
Sunny Side Up Market
Are you heading to the Sunny Side Up Merdeka market this weekend? This famed community market is fully pet friendly, held at Slate at the Row in Kuala Lumpur.
Given this month’s Merdeka theme, this weekend’s market boasts a fully local lineup of brands, especially relevant for gourmet goodies like unique Malaysian savoury granola, low-calorie ice cream and homemade nut butter among other delicious eats.
You can also browse through other lifestyle brands at the market for soy wax-scented candles (where else can you get nasi lemak-scented candles?), skincare, sustainable fashion labels, jewellery and even homemade pet food.
Take note: The Sunny Side Up Merdeka Market is happening this August 3 - 4, from 12pm to 7pm at Slate at the Row.
Riuh
Evolving beyond weekend festivals and markets, Riuh has become a creative community platform for the nation’s most unique art events, from festive iterations like Tambak Riuh Beraya to Gong Xi Riuh and more.
Riuh has since expanded outside the Klang Valley with the latest Riuh OOHA! Festival making its musical rounds across Melaka, Johor, Sarawak, Sabah, and other states.
Kabut in the Park
Founded by self-described #KonMari warrior Evangeline Lim, Kabut in the Park was meant to help urbanites (not bundle sellers or resellers) sell pre-loved items in a family-friendly car booth drive-in format. It has since evolved into a highly popular weekend event that occurs somewhat regularly, usually at the spacious green carpark of the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) at Sentul Park.
Since this is a sustainability-driven event, guests are advised to bring their own cups, cutlery, and shopping bags, as well as foldable chairs, tents, mats and camping gear to set up in any available spot and enjoy the fun.
Some Kabut in the Park editions also feature a special corner with furry friends, set up by GIMMO mobile petting zoo, a hot favourite among families with small kids or animal lovers in general.
Take note: Look out for the next Kabut in the Park, happening on September 28.
Pingmin Market
Organised by the founders of Pingmin Grocer, Pingmin Market is pop-up concept that helps local businesses sell their wares easily, from bakers and F&B businesses to independent bookstores and more. Interestingly, during the pandemic, Pingmin Market operated simply as a Facebook group that acted as a free online platform for Pingmin Grocer vendors to showcase their products and earn income during lockdown.
Today, it is a thriving community that hosts unique weekend events, including the upcoming Big Bake World food festival for baking enthusiasts from August 8 - 11 at the Starhill KL, and an outdoor book market for two consecutive weekends from August 16 - 18 and 23 - 25 at Pingmin Hub in Jalan Kamuning, Kuala Lumpur.
