From powering through back-to-back vernissages to party-hopping without losing steam, we have the ultimate tips and tricks for navigating this glamorous week that features Art Basel, Art Central and many, many more art events

Hong Kong’s annual art week is finally upon us, darlings, and we all know what that means—from March 20, a full calendar of fabulous parties, star-studded dinners,  and more art than you can shake a paintbrush at will ensue. Now, while we wouldn’t dream of missing a minute of the action, a week spent rushing from one event to the next can take its toll. But fret not, for we’ve compiled the essential dos and don’ts for surviving this glamorous marathon with style and sanity intact.

First things first: Hydrate

Gallons of champagne may flow, but do take intermittent breaks from bubblies to drink water. Dehydration is not a good look when one wants to radiate an air of effortless elegance. A snack in one’s bag is also advisable (think individually wrapped dates or toffees)—who knows when one might need an energy boost between back-to-back vernissages?

Now, onto the sartorial side of things

While art week is prime time to show off new season looks, let’s be strategic. Save the sky-high stilettos for dinners and select heels under three inches (or stylish sneakers) for gallery hopping. No one can fully appreciate a Jeff Koons or a Jaffa Lam while suffering from throbbing feet.

Also, plan outfits ahead of time. Trying to make last-minute decisions when one’s fashion compass has been spun by countless cocktails never ends well. And do consider adding comfortable inserts to glamorous shoes—they make all the difference on the dance floor at those late-night after parties. Don’t be afraid to repeat outfits either. Despite the jam-packed schedule, no one actually expects you to produce a week’s worth of brand-new looks. Recycling that va-va-voom Valentino with some fresh accessories is perfectly permissible.

While RSVPing to events, don’t overcommit

FOMO is real, but it’s simply not possible to attend every single thing you are invited to. Be selective and RSVP to what genuinely interests you, not just what sounds exclusive or trendy. This will help avoid burnout—and prevent that thousand-yard stare seen on many fairgoers come day three.

Plan proper transportation ahead of time

With everyone scrambling for taxis and Ubers, pre-booking private car services or arranging to carpool with friends will save time and sanity when darting between events.

Come prepared with small talk topics

Gallery owners, collectors and artists enjoy enthusiastic conversations about the art, not just the parties. Brush up on exhibit details and talking points before arriving.

Pack breath mints and lipstick

Enjoying canapés and glasses of wine can wreak havoc on one’s breath and lip colour. Discreetly freshen up before meeting each new round of people.

Manage social media with care

While sharing on social is part of the experience, avoid overdoing it. Put the phone away and live in the moment so as not to appear more obsessed with Instagram than the actual art.

Sleep when you can

Late nights are inevitable, but do your best to get adequate rest, even if it’s just quick daytime catnaps. No amount of concealer or hair gel can fully disguise dead-eyed exhaustion.

Lastly, go forth and enjoy! Take moments to appreciate the art, connect with inspiring people, and indulge in nibbles and tipples. After a year’s wait, you’ve earned it. See you at the VIP preview.
