Cover Peter Zimmermann at his exhibition at Art Fair Philippines 2023

In case you missed this German artist's exhibition at the recently concluded Art Fair Philippines, we talked to Nunu Fine Art's associate manager Peng Hsiung to let us know more about him

German artist Peter Zimmermann is known for his epoxy paintings that explore the visual effects of surface and material through glassy pour-like shapes of rich colours. His amorphous forms prompt endless interpretation, the depth and density of his materials creating visceral effects of shifting light and colour heightened by layered airbrushing. For source materials, Zimmermann repurposes book covers and old paintings and uses Photoshop filters to manipulate found images from the Internet into unidentifiable abstractions. Zimmermann's works are in numerous private and public collections, including Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Associate manager of Nunu Fine Art Peng Hsiung from Taiwan shares with Tatler their insights on today's art market and why the Filipino audience must also appreciate Zimmermann's art:

Nunu Fine Art is known for its impressive roster of Asian artists, as well as some international contemporary artists who have a following here in Asia. What is so special about Peter Zimmermann that you chose him to feature him at this year's Art Fair Philippines?

Peng Hsiung (PH): As you have probably already known, Zimmermann has been an artist for several decades, and his works have been recognised by many professional art institutions. This time he is invited to participate in the project section of Art Fair Philippines, and we thought it was a good opportunity to have his solo booth to introduce more of his works to local and international audiences.

Tell us more about Zimmermann's works for Art Fair Philippines 2023. Is there a theme enveloping the selected pieces? What aspects of the artist did you highlight?

PH: This time we showed Peter Zimmermann's signature epoxy paintings and oil paintings. With these two different creative media, he explores the nature of digital images in the contemporary world.

Zimmermann is known for digitally manipulating art. His works are distinctive in their glossy, pour-like shapes. What can you comment on today's rise of AI and NFT artworks in the market?

PH: We are happy to see new creative media appear and all kinds of possibilities for artistic creation.

What is your outlook on today's art market? Is there really an increase in interest towards Asian artists?

PH: In this very globalised age, we think not only Asian artists, but also artists from other continents of the world as well are receiving more and more attention from all over the world. That's why we are opening a new gallery in New York this April, with the attempt that artists, collectors, and art lovers in different regions, can have more opportunities to see artworks, and exchange ideas with each other.

Nunu Fine Art has been one of the leading contemporary art galleries in Taipei. How would you like to position yourself in the thriving art market on this side of the world? What are your objectives (or primary goal) and how are you planning to achieve them?

PH: From its inception, Nunu Fine Art has always believed that quality exhibitions, research on artists, and communicating creative concepts are the most important means of communicating art. Over the years, we have taken a multi-faceted approach, communicating with contemporary art lovers through workshops, lectures, publications, artist residencies, projects, etc. The new space opening in April 2023 at 381 Broome Street in New York will continue showing an international roster of important artists from Asia, America, and Europe whom we have worked with at Nunu Fine Art Taipei. We will also uphold our belief in the communicative nature of art, allowing collectors, art museums, and art communities in both places to communicate with each other, and have more opportunities to understand the context of the other market.
