In his solo exhibition, Tran The Vinh conjures new visions of Dalat with deep emotions and expressive brushstrokes.
Some cities are remembered not only by their images but by their sounds. Dalat is one such place—a land where pine trees murmur in the morning mist, where rain dances upon old tiled roofs, and where the quiet mountain town hums with its own melody in every hidden café.
Inspired by these intangible sounds, artist Tran The Vinh presents his solo exhibition Melody on High, running from 22 March to 13 April at QS Art Space, Quang San Art Museum, curated by Ly Doi. Featuring 30 of his latest oil paintings, the exhibition is a dialogue between paint and memory, capturing the essence of Dalat through expressive strokes.

At Melody on High, each painting is a note in a visual symphony. Misty hues, shifting light and shadow—like echoes of the mountain town—blend into a rhythm that invites each viewer to listen in their own way.

Dalat in painting: a symphony of colour and memory
Tran The Vinh does not attempt to capture Dalat with realism. To him, the city is more than winding slopes and rooftops veiled in mist; it is a feeling—an overcast sky, an unhurried pace, a fleeting moment that stirs the memory.

After more than 15 years in the mountain town, he has chosen to tell Dalat’s story through his own palette. The deep glow of sunset, the cool green of young grass, the pale gold of morning light—all merge into a space where memory takes shape. His works do not conform to rigid forms; instead, they suggest, allowing Dalat to exist as both familiar and distant, like a recollection waiting to resurface.
When colours find their own melody
With 30 paintings on display, Melody on High is also an experiment—an exploration of how a painter with a modern, uninhibited artistic vision translates sound into image. Each canvas carries its own rhythm: the hush of midnight, the soaring breath of dawn, the dense, layered harmonies of clouds drifting over Langbiang Peak.

In Melody on High, Tran The Vinh does not portray a single Dalat, but instead creates a space of remembrance—where each visitor may find echoes of their own.
Perhaps, long after leaving the exhibition, one’s heart will still carry the reverberations of colour, of movement just beyond reach—an endless melody. And perhaps, when a cold wind stirs or rain taps softly on the roof, the colours of Dalat will reappear—gentle, hushed, yet powerful enough to anchor the deepest emotions.
