Interior designer and novice equestrian writes a book about the equestrian lifestyle of the famed seaside escape, the Hamptons

“My partner and I have made the Hamptons home since 2015 and though we have a place in Manhattan, we spend most of our time in East Hampton,” says Blue Carreon, author of the book Equestrian Life in the Hamptons.

It wasn’t really a challenge for Carreon to write the book. In fact, he considers it one of his most outstanding achievements. “It is such a beautiful place with wide open spaces, endless beaches, beautiful homes and gardens, and lots of stables and horses,” he describes. For him, the world deserves to know the beauty that is now their home.

The Hamptons is an equestrian playground; it boasts the very necessities of the equestrian lifestyle. Riders and enthusiasts from all around the world visit this part of Long Island to enjoy the atmosphere and witness the competitive side of exciting, high-stakes show jumping and exhilarating polo matches. A year-round destination, the Hamptons prides itself on picturesque landscapes which stay exuberant throughout spring, summer, fall and winter.

The equestrian life and the Hamptons are inextricably linked and have their roots in history and in the lifestyle of many famous personalities. According to Brooke Shields and Joey Wölffer, owners of Wölffer Estate Stables and Wölffer Estates Vineyards, horses are what give them confidence.

“I remember I was scared of everything but I wasn’t scared of horses. I was really timid and shy. The horses gave me this incredible confidence that I didn’t have anywhere else in my life. When I’m on a horse is when I’m happiest,” says Wölffer.

Riding really is an essential part of their everyday life now—a fact Brooke Shields can attest to. “What I loved about riding so much was that I forgot everything else when I was riding. And I had no fear. And I couldn’t wait to jump. Couldn’t wait to just do it, do it, do it.”

Unlike most riders in the Hamptons who grew up riding and belong to families who have ridden for generations, Carreon is a novice. “I think that helped because it made me explore different aspects of the sport, from leisure pursuits to competitive levels. It also made me very curious to find out more about the leading equestrian figures in the Hamptons from past to present,” he shares.

Bound by his interest, curiosity and the general lack of material on the Hamptons, this led to him telling the world about it through a book. It took him a year, but he finally got to write about it—documenting every nook and cranny of the place.

“The most important aspect of the book is to show the equestrian culture and lifestyle that is embedded in the Hamptons community. A love affair that endures to this day,” he says.
