K2LD Architects crafts a Good Class Bungalow that harmoniously melds landscape, architecture, and curated furnishings by Marq HQO
Tucked within one of Singapore’s most coveted residential enclaves, the House of Kirin is a masterclass in tropical living. Designed by K2LD Architects under the leadership of Ko Shiou Hee, this Good Class Bungalow exemplifies the seamless integration of architecture, landscape and interior detailing. At its core is a tranquil courtyard anchored by a bonsai tree, establishing a contemplative focal point for the home. Primary living areas orient towards this lush sanctuary, with a gracefully curved swimming pool weaving the indoor and outdoor environments together.
Furniture consultancy Marq HQO collaborated closely with K2LD to furnish the residence, selecting pieces that embody quiet sophistication and tactile richness. “The integration of the landscape and outdoor spaces into the house, along with the views of the garden and water features from every space and angle, was carefully crafted and enhanced through the thoughtful placement of the furniture,” share the K2LD design team, comprising studio principal director Ko Shiou Hee, senior associate Charlotte Wong, and interior designer Eileen Wong. The result is a layered, serene home in which every detail, from the natural stone cladding to the placement of the bespoke furnishings, contributes to an immersive sensory experience.

Courtyard connection
Privacy and openness were the key priorities for the homeowners, who desired a generous indoor–outdoor flow without compromising on seclusion. K2LD addressed this with an inwards-facing configuration that orients all the major spaces towards the landscaped courtyard. “Addressing concerns about privacy from neighbours while maintaining a sense of openness in the spaces was important,” note the design team. Water plays a pivotal role: stepping stones lead across a reflective pond to the main entrance, while the courtyard’s curved swimming pool overflows into a garden below, ensuring the soothing presence of water throughout the home. Natural light filters into even the basement via skylights submerged within the pool, creating an ever-present connection to nature.
Materiality was carefully restrained to heighten this sensory dialogue. The exterior’s monolithic Vals quartz stone finish is complemented by deep roof overhangs, allowing for wide, expansive windows that invite natural ventilation and garden views in under any weather conditions.

Crafted collaboration
The synergy between K2LD and Marq HQO was instrumental in articulating the interior narrative. Years of collaboration between the two firms enabled a smooth, intuitive furnishing process. With the client’s emphasis on cohesive design punctuated by individuality, Marq HQO curated furniture and lighting from Italian brands Minotti and Lodes respectively to echo the home’s architectural clarity.
Formal entertaining spaces on the ground floor feature the Minotti Goodman sofa and Brink coffee tables, chosen for their sculptural presence and supple finishes. In the dining room, the elongated Linha marble dining table and Fynn chairs from the same brand create a centrepiece that resonates with the understated luxury of the architecture. Bedrooms are outfitted with thoughtfully selected beds, armchairs and lighting—including the Lodes Skyfall bedside pendants and Nostalgia pendant cluster in the entertainment room—tailored to the personalities of each family member while maintaining an overarching harmony.
“Working with all the family members to create a cohesive look for the house, while featuring individuality and character in the different spaces, was a thoroughly enjoyable experience,” reflect the design team.

Refined living
The attention to detail extended beyond furniture selection to spatial orchestration. Special focus was given to framing key feature pieces, such as the artwork facing the entry foyer and the pendant lighting above the entertainment spaces; this custom installation of Lodes fixtures enhances the spatial experience. Outdoors, the Minotti Sunray collection anchors the courtyard seating area, complemented by the Minotti Stony coffee table, balancing a sense of robustness with a refined tactile appeal that is eminently suited to Singapore’s tropical climate.
Throughout the project, Marq HQO demonstrated a deep understanding of materiality, proportion and project management, ensuring precise execution and seamless logistics. The firm’s expertise provided the owners with peace of mind, resulting in interiors that are not only aesthetically cohesive but also
a pleasure to live in.
Completed in December 2023 following two years of meticulous work, the House of Kirin today stands as a serene, sophisticated sanctuary crafted through a shared vision of architectural and furnishing excellence.
