Consummate hostess, Tanya Moreno-de la Paz, opens her home and heart
“Getting together with friends is good for the soul,” declares homemaker and HR Executive and Investment Officer of Kaizen Research Foundation, Tanya Moreno-de la Paz. “I love to entertain because I enjoy welcoming people to my home. Be it anything from a toddler play date to a formal dinner, I feel that having people over breathes life and joy into the house. I’ve always been a sociable person and it makes me happy to get together with loved ones.”
The four-bedroom family home is built specifically for entertaining, with wide open living spaces anchored around a stunning bar, overlooking the shared garden and pool of the family compound. Behind the bar is a stunning hand-painted mural by Tracie Anglo Dizon. A collaboration between the artist and creative talents Ian Giron, and Marga Tambunting, the exotic jungle scene on natural grass cloth is the highlight of the room. “I love this installation,” enthuses Tanya. “It’s quite unique and it gives the room so much character.” The homeowner loves to mix up cocktails, making it the perfect backdrops for welcoming her guests. “I make really great negronis and dirty martinis!” she exclaims.

She is the youngest of four children and has grown up with parties thrown by her older siblings. It’s only natural that it is carried over in her own personal space. “Party planning is kind of a family thing. It’s in our DNA! We live all together and often have joint celebrations. We are fortunate to have wonderful friends, some we in fact share. It’s like one big group, and now, even the children of our friends have become close to our kids. We truly enjoy opening our homes to them,” she says.

When it comes to her own hosting style, she eschews stiff and formal occasions. “Whenever I entertain, I just want my guests to feel at home and be relaxed,” she says. Some of her staples are cheeses and charcuterie, assorted dips, mini egg-salad sandwiches and Boursin with melba toast. Raclette is also on the regular rotation for something heavier. Most importantly, there is always lots to drink. “Quad and I always make sure there are drinks and music. He curates the playlist!” she adds.

Tanya has been married to Dentsu Philippines Media Director Quad de la Paz for 14 years, and the couple has three children: Diego, Andres and Alvaro Raymond. “Having three boys may seem crazy but they have their own space,” she laughs. “They’ve learnt to keep the living spaces clean and just make a mess in their own area.” For people who love to entertain and have children, Tanya suggests: “Make their bedrooms a place they want to be in! Make it special and interesting so they won’t want to leave.”

As a family, they love to spend time together in the living room. “It’s kind of like a great room where we lounge and have our casual meals together,” she explains. Ample and wide sectional linen sofas occupy the centre of the room. Stuffed with down feathers, the “Cloud Couch” from Restoration Hardware is extremely comfortable and allows you to sink into it for hours. On the side, a glass table good for eight sourced from Ito Kish with chairs from Vito Selma are used for simple, everyday affairs. “We like to listen to music there and since it is spacious, there is enough room for the boys to run around and play. Quad and I also love to unwind each night with some wine or a cocktail.”

Tanya describes the interiors as being a modern-day classic: “We wanted the house to feel warm and cosy but also fresh and current.” A muted palette of neutrals and pastels are punctuated by bold black and whites and a few neon touches. “I sought the help of an interior decorator, Sophia Ojeda-Llige, who is a childhood friend of my brothers. I felt very comfortable collaborating with her.” The look is layered but curated, chic yet inviting and with a touch of childlike whimsy, mirroring the personal style of the homeowner who doesn’t shy from colour and loves resort silhouettes.
Most of the furnishings and big pieces were purchased in the United States on a buying trip with her family. “Since we constructed the compound and our homes at the same time, we all went together to shop,” she explains. “It was a fun process, and we were able to source some wonderful things and ship them back.” She has added her own personal touches and particularly likes to find things while travelling abroad. “I always make sure to take back home accessories from my travels. I like to pepper the house with them because they tell a story,” she shares.

The couple consult each other regularly on design decisions which made decorating a much more effortless task. “Quad and I worked on the house together, but he let me take the lead in most aspects,” Tanya says. “Thankfully, we agreed on almost everything. Most of the areas were a collaborative effort but there were certain rooms where he was solely in charge.”
The homeowner is referring to her husband’s “man cave”, a dark and sophisticated retreat in the attic of their home. The media room cum home office has ample space for lounging, complete with its own full bar counter and balcony. Tanya says they love retreating to this space, which is distinctly masculine, for cosier affairs and late-evening drinks with friends. Apart from the iconic mid-century classic Eames lounge chair and ottoman, a unique feature of this space is the vintage Dynaco Pam-1 preamplifier and Dynaco Mark IV monoblock tube amplifiers and Sonus Faber speakers. “Quad is an audiophile,” she declares. “He can spend hours here laying on that chair and listening to music to relax and discover new songs. His music ranges from vocals like Norah Jones and Adele, to electronic music from the likes of Daft Punk. We also love movie nights here with our boys!”

Being both a hands-on mother and a busy executive, Tanya balances her time by allocating moments to herself. Dedicated to her wellness and fitness regime, she loves to exercise on a regular basis. She also created her own little haven off the master bedroom. “I enjoy being in my personal dressing room and bathroom,” she shares. “When Quad and I were building, we decided it was imperative to have separate bathrooms just so we could have our own little space to do our own thing.”

The family loves to travel together and has found lots of joy post-pandemic in more nature-oriented trips. Recently, the couple and their kids went to South Africa on a safari as well as a camping trip in California. Tanya also loves exploring vineyards and foodie destinations across the globe, and spends a lot of time on the beach on weekends in the Philippines. Wherever she goes, however, her definition of home will always be the same: “Home is a place where you want to keep coming back to even if you’re in the most beautiful destinations in the world.”
