A family home receives an elegant makeover by Summerhaus D’zign, future-proofing it for years to come
Surrounded by lush greenery, the hilly Mount Sinai enclave in Singapore is home to flourishing flora and fauna, offering a peaceful retreat from the city. It is also the idyllic and serene setting of this four-bedroom apartment, thoughtfully situated within the Montview condominium.
Overlooking Pandan Valley, the 1,600 sq ft property is part of a residential development built in 2008. What it needed was a carefully considered renovation to future-proof the home, while personalising it to suit the evolving lifestyle and needs of the clients. The homeowners chose Summerhaus D’zign, a Singapore-based firm known for its thoughtful approach and enduring, timeless designs.

Room for More

Upon entering the abode, guests are greeted by an airy, brightly lit interior clad in marble flooring. The open-plan living and dining room is an inviting space set in neutral tones, dotted with turquoise accents. The adjacent open-plan kitchen was enlarged, and is well organised to fit the wife’s daily cooking habits. In this sleek culinary zone, the Blum Servo-Drive system was installed and tailored to accommodate and organise the family’s kitchen appliances, cooking tools, utensils and tableware.

Statement pieces were tastefully selected; these include the Magma Blue quartzite feature wall in a suede finish, which bears unique veining. This takes pride of place in the living area, as part of the TV console. Items of sentimental value were kept and lovingly refurbished, such as two armchairs that have been reupholstered in brighter fabrics for a new look. To add a textural touch to the neutral palette, a special-effects paint was applied to the ceiling in the living area.
Form and Function

Every room was uniquely designed for each member of the family, while overarching stylistic elements keep the look unified. Curved soft furnishings stand in contrast to the angular form of the joinery, while mirrored surfaces help to expand the sense of space. Wooden elements installed on the walls and cabinetry are juxtaposed against matte finishes, creating an elegant, layered look.

Beyond the aesthetics, the interior design was also been thoughtfully personalised to suit the family’s lifestyle and individual needs. The placement of the lighting fixtures, switches and sensors is mindful of the owner’s eye condition. To keep the home neat and uncluttered, an abundance of storage solutions was incorporated into the custom cabinetry and furnishings. For instance, wooden platform beds are installed in the bedrooms, incorporating drawers while staying true to the overall modern-luxury aesthetic.

In the master suite, the elongated bay window has become a seamless part of the corner room through the clever placement of custom cabinetry. The curtains wrap around the space, creating a cocooning effect.
A Clean Slate

Looking at the apartment now, it is hard to picture its original state. Over the years, the unit experienced gradual wear-and-tear that contributed to an insect infestation. Jacelyn Chieng, the project’s lead designer and partner at Summerhaus D’zign, dealt with the obstacles with much gusto. The renovation started with the team sealing up all possible gaps and access points on the walls and ceiling to keep pests from entering the home.

The firm was also mindful of the earlier issues caused by the high humidity in the area. Much care was taken with the selection of materials and finishes to create an evergreen, easy-to-maintain home. All the wooden elements were treated with a protective coat to repel termites. Dehumidifiers were installed in all wardrobes to prevent mould from proliferating, especially in the cabinetry that stores the owner’s cherished guitars.

It took the firm just under five months to complete the renovation. The home’s new look represents the Summerhaus D’zign design ethos perfectly: a bespoke, elegant home crafted to stand the test of time.
