Timeless, modern and utterly calming, this enviable abode is crafted as the perfect setting for a young family to create cherished memories in
A place where “life can happen”; that was the simple aspiration for this tastefully designed family abode in Singapore. The 6,000 sq ft semi-detached house is home to a young family and their pet dog, and was crafted by Livspace as a sanctuary that would blend practical, child-friendly elements with a cohesive and timeless design throughout the interior.
Headquartered in Singapore, Livspace is a technology-driven home interiors and renovation platform that aims to simplify the renovation process for its clients. Co-founded in 2014 by CEO Anuj Srivastava and COO Ramakant Sharma, the firm provides an extensive scope of work, from turnkey projects to new concepts for modular kitchens and custom cabinetry as well as storage solutions. Livspace currently has a presence in over 50 cities in Southeast Asia, India and the Middle East.
“We focused on the idea of contemporary living for a young family; on future-proofing its design rather than following short-lived trends,” says Andrea Rodriguez Junquera, design lead of Livspace Singapore. “We wanted to create a sense of belonging, an oasis in which they could relax and recharge from the outside world, and to design a home, not a house.”

A New Chapter
The extensive renovation of this four-bedroom home involved the full gamut of design and project management services. This included spatial planning, material selection, carpentry design and furniture as well as the choosing of fixtures, lighting and soft furnishings to create a unified look. Junquera took charge of this three-storey property’s stunning makeover, which was accomplished in six months and resulted in different atmospheres in the home’s social zones and private areas.
One of the key objectives was to create an open-plan layout with a cohesive spatial flow that would also emphasise the abode’s connection with nature. The chief idea was to make the home a sanctuary conducive to diverse activities, ranging from “cooking in the open kitchen to relaxing in the al fresco area, working in the platform study while someone plays piano in the background”, explains Junquera. “The connection between the outdoor and the indoor areas brings the family together under one space, and makes for a great entertaining experience,” she says.

To complement the open-plan concept of the living and dining room, Junquera opted for a “bright and warm palette with emphasis on sensory design, textures, colour and lighting”. This meant a clever use of both task lighting and ambient lighting, while layering textures and materials to create a sense of depth as well as comfort.
The designer also utilised decorative lighting fixtures as accent pieces to emphasise the lofty ceiling heights in certain parts of the home, while selecting designs that elevated the overall design concept while being child-friendly.

This is evident in the spacious living and dining room, where curved lighting pieces float overhead like trapeze artists performing acrobatic acts in mid-air. “The light, delicate pendant lamps branch out like trees under a moonlit sky, exuding an ethereal glow. Illuminated wooden shelves, meanwhile, not only store treasures but become treasures themselves in the ambient lighting,” she shares.

Rustic elements such as the use of woven details and wicker create a comforting ambience, complemented by the use of muted taupe and grey tones on the soft furnishings and rug. Tinted mirrors, coupled with handsome wooden furniture and the lavish use of marble, add to the timeless look. “Every reflection, from the artwork to the reflection of the outdoors, is an orchestrated symphony,” adds the designer.
The living and dining zones are clad in Carrara marble, a notable stone variety from Italy known for its striking, feathery grey veins. “The veining of the dining room’s marble surfaces should be prominent and bold as it brings character into the space,” shares the designer.

A Natural Fit
The other social areas in the home are thoughtfully designed, offering an ode to the beauty of nature with flourishing house plants. This can be seen in the light-filled family area, which benefits from the daylight entering via an air well, performing an enchanting dance of light and shadow, and “creating a living mural that evolves with the sun’s sojourn”, in Junquera’s words. The kitchen similarly incorporates plant life that “breathes vitality” into the culinary zone.

The bedrooms convey the restfulness of the living area, but are made more intimate with the choice of darker wood finishes for the cabinetry, and accent colours in deeper hues. The children’s room incorporates a modern treehouse concept to create a space that fosters creativity and hours of fun-filled play for the young ones.

Other notable spaces include the open master bathroom, which is clad in bookmatched tiles that bring a dynamic energy to the minimalist design. The space basks in ample sunlight, and is a place to break away from the fast pace of modern life. Like the rest of the house, it provides a soothing setting that the family now loves returning home to.
