Joey Khu Interior Design turns the unconventional layout of a walk-up apartment in Singapore’s District 9 into a practical and stylish sanctuary.

With its lofty double-volume height and unique architectural features, this walk-up apartment in Singapore’s District 9 already had many enviable qualities. To turn its unconventional layout into a practical and stylish sanctuary, the homeowner enlisted Joey Khu Interior Design to bring out all of its qualities, and more.

Backed by over 20 years of experience, Joey Khu is already a practised hand at the art of spatial design. The founder of his eponymous firm believes that every project should be tailored to fit each client’s unique vision and personal taste. “We emphasise the importance of understanding the client’s vision and lifestyle, and then use our design expertise to bring that vision to life in a unique and practical way,” says Khu.

The interior is designed to maximise all of the two-bedroom apartment’s original features, such as the exposed beams and high ceilings. At the same time, the team ensured that the efficient spatial flow of the 1,300 sq ft unit made practical and aesthetic sense.

“Loft spaces can lack privacy and sound insulation due to the open layout and high ceilings. We explored solutions like the strategic placement of partitions with soundproofing materials, and incorporated motorised blinds that provide privacy without obstructing the light,” explains Khu.

Clean-lined cabinetry has been installed to offer ample storage and minimise clutter while creating a calming, minimalist look. These include the clever use of multifunctional and hidden storage elements.

“We found innovative ways to make the most of every square inch of the loft; we prioritise functionality in every design decision, resulting in a space that seamlessly integrates daily activities and enhances overall usability,” says Khu.

A bright and welcoming entryway greets guests and makes a strong first impression. Eye-catching lighting fixtures draw attention to the lofty height of the space, while the tactile mix of materials includes the use of cement-effect floor tiles. Eastern cadences include a Japanese-inspired sliding door and the various artworks selected for the open-plan living and dining areas.

Large windows and glass walls let an abundance of natural light into the space. The black-metal fishbone stairs complement the home’s luxurious take on the modern industrial style, while the liberal use of wood on the second storey creates a cocooning effect in the home.

A stylish selection from luxury furniture purveyors Made & Make, Space Furniture and W. Atelier was chosen to complement the calming tableau.

“We created an inviting atmosphere made for socialising and relaxing, with carefully selected textiles and decor that emphasise comfort. All the design elements were carefully chosen to create a harmonious visual experience, adhering to the minimalist aesthetic,” adds Khu.

“Custom-made furniture pieces and fixtures were also specifically designed for the apartment to fit the space perfectly, optimising functionality and aesthetics. We combined materials and elements such as the stone countertops, walnut veneer feature wall and joinery work, and selected artistic statement pieces that add a touch of personality and serve as interesting conversation starters,” says Khu.

Taking a total of five months to complete, this result of this renovation is beautiful to behold, and a dream to live in. It embodies all that Khu and his team believe in while creating a perfect sanctuary for their client.
