Designed by Ayutt and Associates design (AAD), Salient House converts urban constraints into architectural beauty. A zig-zag perforated aluminium facade filters noise and heat while light-diffusing glass-block walls share ambient light with the surrounding neighborhood
Sattahip's historic trading district in Chonburi is renowned for its vibrant street life, two-storey timber shophouses, and relaxed coastal pace. Standing out amidst this traditional backdrop is Salient House—a contemporary residential landmark created by Ayutt and Associates design (AAD). Though striking in its avant-garde presence, the home resists isolation, choosing instead to engage in a quiet dialogue with its surrounding community.
This spatial harmony stems from a deep appreciation of the site’s historical context. Rather than imposing a detached luxury box, the architects reinterpreted Sattahip's commercial vitality beneath a refined exterior envelope. Inside, the home honors the owner's authentic lifestyle—housing a local gas distribution hub, birdcages for prized cooing doves, a fighting-rooster run, and a private boxing ring.

The design challenge centered on a single core question: how to preserve traditional living habits within an unapologetically modern residence? Ayutt Mahasom, founder and principal architect of AAD, reflects on this design duality: “Vernacular architecture is defined not by nostalgic rooflines, but by living habits and environmental context. The client wanted a bold, modern landmark, yet refused to sacrifice his traditional daily pleasures. Our role was to forge a space where these contrasting worlds coexist beautifully.”
The result is a refined residence that strikes an effortless balance between contemporary architectural aesthetics and local soul.

Sensory filter
Living at the center of a bustling commercial district brings daily environmental challenges, from heavy traffic noise to harsh coastal sunlight. Instead of erecting solid, claustrophobic walls, AAD wrapped the building in a custom perforated aluminium screen folded in a dynamic zig-zag profile. Functioning as a sensory filter, this secondary skin deflects street noise, dissipates solar heat gains, and creates a tranquil interior sanctuary.
At the same time, the facade draws natural coastal breezes deep into the home. During monsoon rainstorms, the angled panels slow driving wind and water, allowing occupants to leave windows open and enjoy the rain. “The screen dampens tropical downpours before they hit the bedrooms,” Ayutt notes. “It lets residents open windows and smell fresh rain—a rare sensory luxury in urban shophouse environments.”

Redefining vernacular
Reimagining regional architecture for contemporary living, AAD reinterpreted Thai design principles through modern materiality. Rejecting ornamental gabled roofs, the architects embedded vernacular wisdom into spatial behavior—most notably across the ground floor, which functions like a traditional elevated tai-thun (open undercroft).
This ground-floor undercroft provides total spatial flexibility. On weekdays, it accommodates family business logistics, while during festive seasons, the expansive court converts into a banquet hall or community gathering hub—preserving the generous spirit of Thai neighborhood culture.

Along the rear alley boundary, the design team replaced solid boundary walls with translucent glass blocks. Illuminated from within by warm lighting, this elevation acts as a community lantern after dark, providing soft, comforting illumination for neighbors walking down the alley at night.

Geographic rootedness
Material selection for Salient House was driven by both aesthetic rigor and coastal durability. Silver-coated aluminium for the secondary skin was selected to withstand harsh marine air and salt spray, preventing corrosion while maintaining a pristine appearance over time.
Structural concrete and steel provide fire protection within a neighborhood built predominantly of vintage timber shophouses, acting as an effective urban firewall. “We wanted to create a home that brings genuine value to its neighborhood,” Ayutt emphasizes. “A building that improves its urban surrounding rather than simply taking up space.”

Everyday construction materials receive elevated treatment. Standard cinder blocks laid in alternating bond patterns frame the entry court. As sunlight sweeps across the masonry, shifting shadow patterns dance over the rough blocks, proving that architectural refinement comes from thoughtful placement rather than expensive imports.

Ultimate challenge
Balancing luxury living, commercial activities, and neighborhood safety called for clever architectural solutions. Deep concrete eaves extending around the perimeter are engineered to serve as emergency access walkways for firefighters, seamlessly integrating safety regulations into the home's sleek silhouette.

Balancing visual privacy with open views required equal nuance. “We enclosed what was necessary for privacy and opened up what mattered for wellbeing,” Ayutt explains. “Rather than building solid perimeter walls, we used strategic landscaping to screen neighbors while reclaiming views of the open sky.”
This approach reaches its peak on the upper-storey terraces. Apertures cut into the aluminium facade frame views of mature tree canopies, sky, and coastal horizons while shielding interiors from neighboring windows. More than a private sanctuary, Salient House stands as a thoughtful model for urban infill—celebrating local heritage through contemporary architecture.
