Mr Shopper Studio turns an architectural quirk into a design statement in this airy, light-filled apartment
Sometimes, the best way to overcome a difficult situation is to embrace the problem. Tasked to redesign an apartment in the Trillium condominium, Singapore design practice Mr Shopper Studio looked at the unconventional shape of its living room as an opportunity rather than an inconvenience.
The firm aimed to give the 1,850 sq ft home a number of design elements that capitalise on its peculiarities, coupled with a modern classic scheme for an enduring aesthetic. “We faced a couple of challenges on this project, such as the oddly shaped layout of the living space,” says Johan Ng, senior interior designer at Mr Shopper Studio, who worked on the revamp of the three-bedroom unit.

To play up the unique contours of the living room, which is curved along one side, Ng introduced a similarly shaped cove ceiling with smooth, rounded lines that enhance the existing curved layout. As the main highlight of the living space, especially when lit in the evening, it lightens and enhances the overall visual flow with its organic form and makes the curves in the house a positive feature rather than a flaw.
The voluminous living room also features pale walls adorned with bead moulding in keeping with the modern classic scheme; this design element is continued seamlessly in the dining zone for a unified look. Next to the TV, a backlit and mirrored shelving unit displays curios and a family portrait photo, adding a personal touch to the space. The snug, textural sofa and the metal-accented dining table and chairs were sourced from Italian brand Calligaris for their timeless appearance and quality construction.
