Pins Design Studio transforms a residence in Melaka into a vibrant minimalist home where flexible spaces, natural light, and playful details create the perfect post-pandemic family sanctuary

This residence in Melaka not only exudes quiet luxury but is also full of life and personality. Eric Ooi, design director at Pins Design Studio, who carried out the interior design, explains that this balance between vibrancy and poise was his exact intention: “We wanted to break away from the monotony of traditional minimalism by injecting the home with a sense of possibility.” Accordingly, the restrained design language was just the starting point in the creation of a family home which would respond to the rhythms of daily life, encourage interactions between family members, and also allow for quirky, characterful details.

A guiding philosophical mantra for the design team was “formlessness is form”. In practice, this meant that the focus was on crafting spaces that were not rigid in their usage but were instead flexible and adaptable. A motivating factor for this approach was the desire to conceptualise new ways of living in the post-pandemic era. The experience of lockdowns meant that houses had to accommodate a greater variety of functions. Ooi explains that adaptability, in this context, is all about ‘allowing occupants to think and shift states freely’.

The living room is the ideal representation of this overarching design philosophy. Here, there is an air of neutrality which is both welcoming and calming. The muted aesthetic means that the room can serve as a blank canvas, or else as an unobtrusive, inclusive setting for different social permutations. It is no surprise that pure white tones form the basis of the colour palette; meanwhile, simple geometrical lines and volumes predominate, creating a sense of spaciousness and ease.

The living room demonstrates an unwavering focus on achieving a clean finish. For instance, note how the flat-screen TV is integrated seamlessly into the built-in cabinetry. Next to the plush sofa, we find an elegant design solution: a raised platform which flanks the window, providing both seating and storage. Another concealed storage area is located under the TV; however, rather than providing seating, this element functions as a flexible display for artworks and daily objects.

Flow state

In order to encourage the flow of both circulation and light, the design team opted to deconstruct strict boundaries. Before its renovation, the original building had a kitchen area that was blocked off, cramped, and dim. Pins Studio reimagined the entire ground floor by adopting an open layout. As a result, circulation flows from the living room to the dining area, and then to the kitchen area.

Frameless panoramic sliding glass doors in the living room do their part to blur the distinction between inside and out. One major benefit is that this entire stretch of the house now gets to luxuriate in the bright natural light and brisk sea breeze of the neighbouring coast. Ooi adds that, when the glass doors are fully open, ‘the space transforms instantly, allowing people to flow freely between interior and exterior, embracing nature and the surrounding views.’

A similarly smooth flow of space is to be found upstairs. The master bedroom, master bathroom, and walk-in wardrobe are all connected thanks to an open-plan layout. This time, though, a sliding door system was put in place in order to achieve a balance between privacy and openness. The sliding door between the bedroom and bathroom acts as a flexible partition which ensures ease of access when open and then reveals a hidden full-length mirror when closed. The design is thus responsive to the daily rhythms of the occupants. As with the ground floor, natural light is a crucial element here. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows in both the bedroom and the bathtub area flood the space with sunlight, while natural stone and light timber accents add to the bright atmosphere.

As stated earlier, Ooi was keen to push beyond the bounds of traditional minimalism. It was thus important to accommodate design gestures that would tend towards the characterful, quirky, or even dramatic. A case in point is the striking dynamism of the outdoor spiral staircase. This pure white helix cannot help but serve as a sculptural focal point. Ooi points out how ‘it contrasts beautifully with the clean, modern facade, adding depth to the overall composition.’

Elsewhere, organic forms disrupt some of the more austere geometrical elements, thus bringing a sense of playful liveliness to the whole design. For instance, the gentle curve of the kitchen island is subtly echoed by a similar curve in the ceiling above. This curving motif is sustained even in smaller details such as the rounded neck of the kitchen faucet or the looping bend of the indoor staircase’s handrail.

Other details introduce contrasting elements that energise the predominantly tranquil mood of the whole house. For instance, there is no ignoring the accents of bright blue and orange that dial up the vibrancy of the children’s rooms. And then we have the selection of chairs, which add a current of quirky eccentricity throughout. In particular, the dining room and kitchen area feature a range of characterful seating options, including zigzagging chairs and wooden stools reminiscent of chess pawns.

Ultimately, this project is a testament to the way in which minimalism can be given new life. In Ooi’s words, ‘This is more than a home, it is a living, breathing space that evolves with time, allowing the story of the household to unfold endlessly.’
