For returning clients, Designworx reimagined an awkward attic as a private retreat for living, working and unwinding in a Bukit Timah bungalow

Designing for returning clients is one of the highest compliments an interior designer can receive. The homeowners are long-time patrons of Designworx Interior Consultant; this collaboration marks more than a decade of shared design journeys.

The couple first engaged Designworx for their first home, and again in 2010 for their Bukit Timah bungalow. Beyond their homes, they have also entrusted the design studio with their jewellery boutiques in Suntec City, Wisma Atria and Marina Bay Sands. Earlier this year, the couple approached Designworx once more to remodel the awkward attic level of their Bukit Timah bungalow which has now been transformed into a serene 1,410 sq ft master suite.

Haven in the Heights

A generous walk-in wardrobe was at the top of the couple’s wish list for the Bukit Timah bungalow. The wife wanted ample room, plus a dedicated cabinet for her handbags. The homeowners also envisioned having a freestanding bathtub, a yoga corner, a cosy lounge, a compact pantry for late-night snacks and a shared study for work. Removing a redundant common bath and improving sound insulation from the floor below were equally essential.

The attic’s expansive footprint was a boon, but the sloped ceilings and sharp gable angles posed challenges. Design director Terri Tan started by removing partitions to create an airy, open-plan layout.

The absence of solid partitions allows light to flow while maintaining distinct areas for study, lounging, yoga and sleep. The original timber flooring was refreshed through sanding and varnishing, retaining a sense of continuity with the rest of the Bukit Timah bungalow.

Next, the designer introduced curved plaster ceilings, softening the attic’s sharp angles. Curved elements create a gentle rhythm that contrasts with the linear walk-in wardrobes. Ingenious millwork turned under-eave spaces into concealed storage and display shelving, ensuring every corner served a purpose.

Understated Foundations

A warm, neutral palette grounds the space: creamy plaster walls, brushed bronze accents, timber flooring and tactile acoustic panels. Lighting was treated as sculpture, with the Visionnaire Lamia chandelier becoming a glittering focal point above the staircase, while concealed strip lights trace the plaster curves of the ceiling.

Acoustic panels around the stairwell’s glass panels provide sound control while adding subtle texture. The master bath, centred on a sculptural freestanding tub with brushed nickel fittings, feels as indulgent as a private spa.

Enduring Collaboration

Decades of collaboration and trust culminate in a retreat where work, wellness and rest flow. The husband’s eye for detail—shaped by years in the jewellery business—paired seamlessly with Designworx’s vision. The wife guided the design of the yoga space and colour accents, ensuring the suite balanced functionality with serenity.

The couple summed up their delight: “It feels like a five-star hotel suite in our home, filled with memories and moments we cherish.”
