In Makati City, a family is creating a sanctuary for vibrant gatherings and peaceful moments alike

Perched high above the vibrant pulse of Makati city, this family’s penthouse offers more than just a commanding skyline view—it delivers an immersive experience in sophisticated living.

With unobstructed vistas stretching from the glowing towers of Makati to the silhouettes of Manila all around, the home opens itself up to the sky with expansive balconies that double as a generous stage for intimate soirées with family and friends. It’s a dwelling designed as much for celebration as it is for calm reflection, wrapped in light, art and thoughtful detail.

Drawing inspiration from the evocative interiors of Kelly Wearstler and the quiet majesty of nature, the space unfolds as a dialogue between a minimalist design story and the family’s unique personalities.

Function is paramount, but never at the expense of beauty and ease. Wherever one goes in the space, they feel immediately comfortable. “We’re homebodies who love to host,” shares the homeowner, Patty Zamora. “Each space had to not only serve its intended purpose, but feel like a labour of love—a mom’s love.”

At the heart of the home is an open-plan entertaining area where the kitchen, dining and living rooms are seamlessly connected. The kitchen, cleverly designed with discrete storage solutions, is an exercise in restrained efficiency. Everything has a place, and that sense of order allows creativity—both culinary and conversational—to flow freely.

Adjacent, the dining area is anchored by a simple yet elegant ash wood table, its modern chairs poised before arguably the best seat in the house: a panoramic view that bathes every meal in natural light and urban drama. Here, the skyline isn’t just a backdrop; it’s the table’s most breathtaking companion.

The living space evokes a stylish lounge: long, five-meter couches create an atmosphere of relaxed sophistication, ideal for hosting guests or enjoying a quiet night in. The space balances craftsmanship and ease, allowing the vibrant conversations to take centre stage whether the family has friends over or is simply unwinding after a long day.

Across the foyer—a gentle threshold between public and private zones—lies the home’s most intimate heart: the family room. Described by the homeowner as her favourite place, this multi-functional sanctuary is a movie den, art studio, library and second living room. The walls are adorned with artwork made by the homeowner and her young daughter, whose paintings have earned a place at the Louvre Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and a distinction as a 2024 Award-Winning Child Artist.

“This room is pure joy,” Zamora explains. “It’s where creativity lives and grows, where we play, learn and make together.” Light pours in generously, with thoughtful use of UV- and heat-rejecting films instead of curtains in areas that don’t require privacy, allowing the architecture and furnishings to bask in natural glow, uninterrupted.

In this penthouse, no detail is left to chance. Materials are chosen not just for their quality or sustainability, but for their emotional resonance. Every shape, line and texture has been considered with curiosity and grace. Even in the private master bathroom, where asymmetry lends an architectural elegance, the commitment to quality and shared experience holds strong.

“I always keep myself informed about trends, but I don’t follow them blindly,” Zamora says. “Design is emotional. It should reflect how you live, think and feel.”

Perhaps what’s most striking is the home’s unwavering clarity. Every space has a reason to be, a feeling to evoke, a role to play. The division between public and private—entertaining and everyday—is deliberate, defined by a foyer that allows the family to transition seamlessly between the roles of hosts and homebodies.

And in a world where homes often shapeshift after every gathering, this one remains constant. “Our home looks exactly like the photos—90 per cent of the time,” Zamora says. “It’s lived in, but it’s loved. That makes all the difference.”
