Explore this contemporary home in Alabang, Metro Manila, that rises above its village setting to become a masterpiece of modern hospitality and personal expression
Some homes call to their future owners with a promise of what’s to come. But for the homeowners of this corner lot in Alabang, Manila, the space’s majestic presence was made immediately clear. Positioned at the highest point of the village, the home stood out not only for its physical elevation but for its commanding presence.
The vision that emerged from this space reflects interior designer Rock Robins’ philosophy, born from the confluence of people, places and things from all over the world. “As an interior designer, my biggest inspiration comes from travelling the world,” he explains. “This opens one’s eyes to what is possible and prevents us from being boxed into local trends.” This fascinating perspective permeates every corner of this Alabang home, creating spaces that feel both globally sophisticated and intimately personal.

True luxury is found in a balance between indoor and outdoor living, and this home’s layout prioritises that above all. With a deep sense of continuity, the common areas flow seamlessly, accommodating the family’s commitment to hospitality while maintaining distinct character.
Upon entering the home, one is captivated by the interplay of muted tones with vibrant hues. “The client never used to love colour,” says Robins. “But since I love to use colour in my designs, she trusted my judgement and loved the outcome.” The result is a living room that feels like a tranquil backdrop for gatherings with family and friends, while still showcasing the family’s unique art collection. The furniture pieces are clad in neutral shades of beige, brown and blue, while the accessories add pops of orange and teal to liven up the space.
While the Alabang home’s sophistication speaks to international influences and design expertise, its most meaningful elements remain deeply personal. The baby grand piano that graces one of the living spaces carries particular significance—a sentimental gift from the homeowners to their son, celebrating his academic achievements and musical talents. Such touches transform spaces from showcases into sanctuaries, where objects carry emotional weight alongside aesthetic value.

For a family whose home “never becomes empty,” it was essential to blend functionality with their aesthetics. The kitchen and pantry reflect this understanding, offering ample storage solutions for the extensive collection of cutlery and crockery that sophisticated entertaining demands. Yet these practical elements never feel utilitarian—instead, they integrate seamlessly into the home’s aesthetic narrative.
The kitchen gives a glimpse of the dining area, taking inspiration from the art lining its walls. Robins chose each piece to complement the others in the room. Notable details include the orange leather chairs echoing the dynamic details of a nearby painting. One’s eye is also drawn to the use of geometry in the space, from the herringbone-patterned wood panelling to the playful black-and-white credenza mirroring the painting nestled above it.

The main living areas then cascade naturally toward the lanai and pool, creating an effortless way to cool down amid Manila’s summertime heat. The swimming pool serves not merely as a luxury amenity but as essential equipment for the father and son's fitness routines, while a dedicated gym provides year-round training opportunities. Adjacent to this outdoor oasis, a multipurpose space is anchored by a bar and tables for effortless lounging, all year round. The contrast of the wooden flooring with the home’s stone exterior also adds to the tranquil atmosphere.
Returning inside and climbing upstairs, one is captivated by the details of each hallway. Each one has been transformed into a gallery, allowing both residents and guests to experience painting and sculpture as integral elements of daily life rather than static decorative objects. This approach transforms circulation spaces from mere transitions into destinations in their own right, with each corridor offering a curatorial narrative.
But while the public spaces celebrate connection and community, the private quarters of this Alabang home offer essential retreat and restoration. Each bedroom has been conceived as a personal sanctuary, designed with what Robins describes as “a homey and relaxing feel.” Despite their status as gracious hosts, Robins understands the value of unwinding after a long day of socialising.
Each family member’s private space thus reflects their personalities well. The bedrooms maintain more subdued hues. In the master suite, Robins pairs a herringbone pattern with a plush, orange headboard. In another bedroom, Robins paired a cool grey with accents of blush pink, carrying the theme on with a dynamic floral rug that adds layers of texture to the space. The master suite is particularly notable for a walk-in closet for the homeowner who believes fashion is an avenue for self-expression.

When Robins asked whether this would be their final home, the clients expressed enthusiastic affirmation that speaks to the project's ultimate success. This isn’t a stepping stone or temporary showcase, but a permanent foundation for the life they’ve built and the memories they'll continue to create.
The true measure of this Alabang home’s success lies not in its impressive scale or sophisticated finishes, but in its capacity to enhance the rhythms of modern family life. It accommodates the artist and the athlete, the collector and the entertainer, the social butterfly and the quiet contemplator. In doing so, it becomes something increasingly rare in our age of specialisation—a home that truly serves every aspect of its inhabitants’ lives while maintaining a distinctive charm.
