Six family members means six different ideas of what a dream home looks like, but nothing is too big a challenge for Designworx

There is indeed no place like home, but for a multigenerational family like the Chius, turning a new semi-detached 7,000 sqft house at Begonia Terrace into a place to call home was a process that took careful thought, design, and planning.

“After purchasing our new house in December 2020, we were looking for a designer who could give our home a modern and stylish look,” says Jay Chiu.

He and his wife, Jasmine, live with their son, daughter, and two elderly parents. With six family members, each with their own ideas of what the ideal home looks like, doing up the interior presented a challenge in creating a cohesive space while respecting six individual’s preferences.

The project enjoyed one significant advantage—the knowledge and resources Jay had at hand, as the founder and managing director of Grandwork, a well-established interior fit-out company. The plan was for the Grandwork team to collaborate closely with the chosen interior studio to execute the design.

“We looked through the portfolios of numerous designers on the internet and found that Designworx suited us best, in terms of style and concept,” Jasmine recalls.

Designworx rose admirably to the challenge, taking a total of seven months to create a sanctuary for the family that was modern with a hint of understated luxury.

“Jay and Jasmine were a joy to work with,” says Terri Tan, design director of the award-winning local studio. “They knew what they liked, but were also open to other ideas. We were privileged to be a part of a collaborative process where we tailored every room to each individual family member’s lifestyle, personality, likes and dislikes.”

A convivial space for the family

One of the family’s main requests for the living room was a sofa large enough to sit all of them. A Ditre L-shaped sofa fits the bill perfectly, flanked by two Reeve swivel armchairs from Minotti, and a set of Flexform Fly calacatta oro marble coffee table and side tables. The blue fabric of the armchairs is repeated in the cushions of the sofa, while turquoise accent cushions customised in specially sourced and imported Hermès fabrics add a little more colour.

A bespoke black and white rug pulls the various elements together. Hanging above it all, like the cherry on top, are two customised interlocking crystal ring lights from Spectraone—“the statement lighting is spectacular,” says Jay. A bronze sculpture behind the sofa and Jay’s guitar collection add visual interest.

The open-plan layout of the shared spaces presented one of the biggest challenges in the project. “We had to find ways to clearly define the living room, dining area, and dry kitchen,” Tan explains. Visual separation is achieved by using different wall treatments, colour schemes and feature lights.

The kitchen and dining area are clearly demarcated from the living area by a dark ebony feature wall and full-length, bronze tinted mirrors. Drawing the eye to the space above the Bonaldo Art dining table is a chandelier from the Glamour collection by Serip.

A private sanctuary

Something that caught Jasmine’s eye while on the hunt for an interior design studio was an embroidered panel in one of Designworx’s past projects. She requested a similar feature for her own bedroom, and the result is an elegant chinoiserie-style embroidered backdrop behind the bed.

“The eye is immediately drawn to the feature wall behind the bed as you enter the master bedroom,” says Tan. “If you look carefully at the panels, you will notice a pair of long-tailed birds sitting together lovingly on gingko branches.”

The panel has since become a favourite with Jay. “We especially love it,” he enthuses. “The gingko leaves symbolise longevity.”

Storage was a priority in the master bedroom and its en-suite bathroom. For Jasmine’s extensive accessories collection, the white oak veneer wardrobe, cabinets, and accessories island custom-built by Grandwork provide the perfect solution. In the bathroom, vanity drawers and a full-height integrated dresser corner neatly conceal beauty products and toiletries.

Childhood dreams come true

“The daughter’s room is a study in the Dior style,” describes Tan. The young lady is an admirer of the interiors of the VVIP room in Dior’s boutique.

A grey silver colour palette, punctuated by dusty pink accents dominates the space here. Her bag collection is proudly displayed in a boutique-style glass cabinet beside the dressing area.

“The son’s room is every Star Wars and Marvel fan’s dream,” says Tan. He’s a collector of Star Wars and Marvel figurines, and wanted space to display his prized possession. The Designworx team took measurements of his collection, and created a bespoke acrylic display shelf that perfectly fits every figurine.

His gaming corner comes complete with a height adjustable table from Omni and a gaming chair from Secret Lab. His request for colour changing ambient lights is fulfilled by a smart voice-controlled AI system.
